Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Fair. 87 pages. Written during the Great Depression and right around the time of the Seventh World Congress of the Communist International (Comintern), the book reflects the intense anxiety within the British conservative and religious establishment regarding the perceived threat of Soviet espionage, subversive ideologies, and institutional infiltration. A central focus of the book includes the strategy of international communism using "Trojan Horse" tactics—infiltrating existing democratic organizations and trade unions rather than attacking them solely from the outside. Godden explicitly cited the Comintern's Secretary-General, Georgi Dimitrov, who advocated that revolutionary workers should utilize such methods to penetrate the hearts of enemy camps. The publication aligns with a turbulent period for communism in the United Kingdom: • The CPGB and Industrial Action: The Communist Party of Great Britain (CPGB), founded in 1920, was heavily funded and directed by Moscow via the Comintern. It attempted to gain leverage during major industrial disputes, such as the historic 1926 General Strike. • State Crackdowns: Fearing a Bolshevik-style revolution, the British state actively targeted communist operations. Special Branch conducted frequent raids on the CPGB's King Street headquarters, including high-profile arrests of party leadership in 1921 and 1925. • Intellectual Recruitment: Around the same time this book was published, the Soviet Union successfully recruited its most famous British spy ring—the Cambridge Five (including Kim Philby and Guy Burgess)—who were drawn to communism during the economic hardships of the 1930s. First edition thus - extra un-numbered copy from an 'Edition de Luxe' limited to 250 numbered copies. xiii, 326pp. a colour frontispiece from a miniature portrait of Henry Fielding and many black and white illustrations. PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK. Gertrude Mary Godden (1867-1947) was an English author of works on anthropology and folklore. She also wrote a few biographies, and the present volume is concerned with the life of the English writer and judge Henry Fielding (1707-1754), and draws on much new material. Literary criticism has been avoided; but incidents disclosed by hitherto unpublished documents, which add to our knowledge of Fielding's personality, have been given. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with a red cloth spine and a paper title label on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling to the boards. The spine is slightly faded with some soiling to the title label and the spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with a name written on the top corner of the front fixed endpaper.…
