Paperback. Condition: New. Uncovers the significance of walls in the drawings of Henry Spencer Moore after World War II. Henry Spencer Moore (1898-1986) was one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century. This book and exhibition offer a new reading of Moore's celebrated Shelter series and the artist's fascination with images of walls during and immediately after World War II. Henry Moore: Shadows on the Wall accompanies a focused exhibition at the Courtauld Gallery. After the destruction of his London studio early in World War II, Henry Moore began drawing figures sheltering from bomb raids in the London Underground. The walls of these sheltered spaces came to absorb his attention in an altogether new way, becoming scene-setters and key components of his drawings. This fascination with the bricks and the presence of walls, their texture, mass, and volume, became especially important after his project to illustrate the wartime radio play The Rescue, based on Homer's Odyssey. Henry Moore, a collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation, suggests for the first time that the walls in his drawings offer a new way to understand some of his most individual and monumental post-war sculpture projects.

First Edition. Fine paperback copy; slightly dust-dulled. Remains well-preserved overall. Summary; The Courtauld Collection: A Vision for Impressionism' accompanies a landmark exhibition at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris exploring Samuel Courtauld's role as one of the great collectors of the twentieth century. The catalogue and exhibition showcase Courtauld's extraordinary collection, which will be on display in Paris for the first time in over sixty years. One of the finest collections of Impressionism anywhere in the world was assembled by the English industrialist and philanthropist Samuel Courtauld (1876-1947). During the 1920s, Courtauld acquired seminal works by all of the major Impressionists, from Renoir's early masterpiece La Loge to Manet's last great work, A Bar at the Folies-Bergere. His collection grew to include such iconic works as Gauguin's great Tahitian nude Nevermore and one of Van Gogh's most famous paintings, Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear. Courtauld was particularly devoted to Cezanne and put together the largest collection of his work in the United Kingdom, including the epic Montagne Sainte-Victoire with Large Pine and one of the celebrated Card Players. After a decade of collecting, Courtauld gave the majority of these remarkable works to establish The Courtauld Institute of Art and Gallery in London. Paperback. Condition: New. Rodin and Dance: The Essence of Movement is the first serious study of Rodin's late sculptural series known as the Dance Movements. Exploring the artist's fascination with dance and bodies in extreme acrobatic poses, the exhibition and accompanying catalogue give an account of Rodin's passion for new forms of dance - from south-asian dances to the music hall and the avant garde - which began appearing on the French stage around 1900. Rodin made hundreds of drawings and watercolors of dancers. From about 1911 he also gave sculptural expression to this fascination with dancers' bodies and movements in creating the Dance Movements, a series of small clay figure studies (each approx. 30 cm in height) that stretch and twist in unsettling ways. These leaping, turning figures in terracotta and plaster were not exhibited during Rodin's lifetime or known beyond his close circle, and were only cast in bronze posthumously. Presented alongside the associated drawings and photographs of some of the dancers, they show a new side to Rodin's art, in which he pushed the boundaries of sculpture, expressing themes of flight and gravity. This exhibition catalogue aims to become the authoritative reference for Rodin's Dance Movements, comprising essays from leading scholars in the field of sculpture. It will include an introductory essay on the history of the bronze casting of the Dance Movements and the critical fortune of the series, an essay on the dancers Rodin admired, and an extensive technical essay. The Catalogue will comprise detailed entries on the works in the exhibition and new technical information on the drawings. Contributors include Alexandra Gerstein, Curator of Sculpture and Decorative Arts, The Courtauld Gallery; Antoinette Le Normand-Romain, Director, Institut National d'Histoire de l'Art, Paris; Juliet Bellow, Associate Professor of Art History, American University in Washington, DC and currently Resident Fellow, the Center for Ballet and the Arts, New York University; François Blanchetière, Curator of Sculpture at the Musée Rodin with sculpture conservators Agnès Cascio and Juliette Lévy; Sophie Biass-Fabiani, Curator of Works on Paper at the Musée Rodin; Kate Edmondson, Conservator of Works on Paper at The Courtauld Gallery; and Aline Magnien, Director of the Laboratoire de Recherche des Monuments Historiques.
