Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the fourth century CE the Roman Empire was still the most important state in both the east and the west of Europe. It was coming under increasing pressure from migrating groups. This pressure would break the empire into two halves. The western half did not survive but the eastern half of…the empire, based in the city of Constantinople, would renew itself. It would grow to become a famous empire in its own right. For almost a thousand years it would fight against pressures from both inside and outside the empire. It finally succumbed to the power of the Ottoman Turks in the fifteenth century CE. From the third century CE, the Roman Empire had been fighting against the Sassanid dynasty of Persia. Neither side had managed to achieve a decisive victory. The period covered by 'The Rise of Byzantium' continues this long running conflict. At the end of the period there was a decisive victory but it did not belong to either the Byzantines or the Sassanids. The victor would be a new power, the Arabs, that emerged from the southern Arabia. They were driven by religious fervor and would sweep all before them over the next 200 years. During the early part of the period covered by this expansion, the armies of Byzantium set out to recover some of the lost territories of the Roman Empire. Sometimes they were successful and re-established control, but in most cases any recovery was only partial. Byzantium alone was not always strong enough to hold off the pressures of the migrating groups. As with the later Roman Empire, there were often times when Byzantium needed its allies to be able to defeat these invaders. These migrating groups would include traditional enemies such as the Franks, Goths, and Vandals. During the period new migrants would arrive such as the Avars, Bulgars, Lombards and Slavs. Each new threat was dealt with in its turn and the Byzantine army gained in experience. At the start of this period, the Byzantine army looked much the same as the Late Roman army, but by the period's end it had changed to a more flexible and resilient structure based on a series of provincial forces. This book provides an expansion to the 'Three Ages of Rome' wargames' rules. The six historical scenarios span 'The Rise of Byzantium' and link directly into the last period of the 'Three Ages' rules. The new army lists introduce armies from across the period of the expansion set. They complement the armies in the original set of rules enabling players to recreate more battles from the ancient period. As in the 'Three Ages', in battle nothing is certain but generals that practice their skills are more likely to be victorious. AUTHOR: The author has been engaged with military history and wargaming for many years. His experience includes a decade in the Territorial Army using his simulation skills to provide advice and training at a tactical level. He has been involved in scenario design for cold war wargames but his current interests are in European medieval and seventeenth century history. An active gamer from an early age, he is a current member of the Pike and Shot Society. In support of his research efforts he has also been a member of the Society of Ancients and the Lance & Longbow Society. His current research into game design and historical topics continues with enthusiasm. He has been a national level competition gamer for his club but is now focused on game design, with an emphasis on creating enjoyment and playability. Like most wargamers he enjoys painting, trying new ideas for games, and occasionally winning a game or two. 24 colour photos, 6 maps, 28 tables The Rise of Byzantium expands the original atthree Ages of Rome ruleset beyond the collapse of Romes Western Empire. It covers the Early Byzantine wars of Belisarius and Narses, and ends with the wars of Mauricius. The six new historical scenarios span three Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Before the birth of the Roman Empire the history of the Classical world was dominated by the history of Greece, its cities, and kingdoms. The best known of these stories is the achievement of Alexander, son of Philip of Macedon, who would become known to the world as Alexander the Great. The… 'Age of Alexander' starts with Alexander as King of Macedon. He convinces the Greek states to join him in the conquest of their traditional enemy, the Persian Empire. Moving into the Persian lands he fought several battles, defeating the Persians, and taking control of what is known today as the Middle East. Alexander forged the largest empire the world had seen but there was more. Moving east he campaigned against the Scythians and crossed the River Indus into India. The army of the Indian King Porus included numerous elephants which was different from anything that Alexander had met before. These beasts impressed the Macedonians and they would come to be a frequent element in the armies of Alexander's Successors. Unfortunately, Alexander died before he could achieve his vision for his Empire. The territories were shared between his generals (the Successors). These men then fought against each other, trying to increase their personal power. The competing pressures were too great and Alexander's Empire broke up. The next century would see many wars between the Successors and their various descendants. Watching from the west, the Romans saw a chance to take advantage of the weaknesses of the individual Successor states. They started by invading and conquering Macedonia. They followed this success with wars against the Galatians, and the various Successor states across the Middle East. These wars included the conquest of the Ptolemaic dynasty of Queen Cleopatra, which became one of the most famous stories in history. This book provides an expansion to the 'Three Ages of Rome' wargames' rules. The four historical scenarios span the 'Age of Alexander' and link directly into the first period of the 'Three Ages' rules. The new army lists introduce armies from across the period of the expansion set. From the rear cover write-up : "Amazing changes in Eastern Europe erupt in world politics, and not one of America's foreign policy gurus comes within a country mile of predicting them", Eric Alterman wrote in "The New York Times" However, he continued , "The British writer Timothy G…arton Ash has documented grassroots politics in Eastern Europe for 'The New York Review of Books' since 1984 . Even before Mr. Gorbachev, he reported that pressure for democratic change was building from below." "Comments like these are no surprise to 'New York Review' readers who have been perusing essays from Czechoslovak President Vaclev Havel since 1979. Havel's essays, which now come by fax from the Prague Castle, used to arrive via the Czech underground when he was in prison. Andrei Sakharov and Adam Michnik are other famous dissidents whose early essays for the 'Review' were written in prison or internal exile. In this book some of the best essays from dissident writers , plus a 'Conversation in Prague' by Philip Roth are collected in a single volume : "Writings From the East". Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. n seventeenth century Europe it must have seemed that there was always a conflict somewhere. This century of battles is the inspiration for these wargames rules. Designed for ease of play, In Deo Veritas offers a player experience based on the commander's problems. The rules are designed to…create a feel for the uncertainty of battle. Keeping the men going, even when things don't seem too good, is critical for success. Units become progressively disabled as disorder sets in and cohesion begins to suffer. At the heart of the game is a simple Disorder Test. If commanders don't take care to maintain cohesion then their forces could be heading for destruction! In weighing up the scale of your achievements at the end of the game, will you be able to claim a major victory in your dispatches? Just take care to remember that your next battle may not be so successful. Using the smaller scales of 6, 10 or 15mm the usual 6' x 4' table gives a scale battlefield over a mile wide. This is large enough to cover all but the largest engagements. The six historical battle scenarios provide different challenges and give players the insight into the nature of seventeenth century warfare. The Terrain Generator and a system of points allow the players to develop their own scenarios. In battle nothing is certain but generals that practice their skills are more likely to be victorious. 6 scenario maps, 56 tables, 44 colour photos/ills The aim of these rules is to help gamers recreate the challenge and uncertainty of European battle during the seventeenth century. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
