Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In anglo-american literature there exist numerous books, devoted to the application of the Laplace transformation in technical domains such as electrotechnics, mechanics etc. Chiefly, they treat problems which, in mathematical language, are governe…d by ordi nary and partial differential equations, in various physically dressed forms. The theoretical foundations of the Laplace transformation are presented usually only in a simplified manner, presuming special properties with respect to the transformed func tions, which allow easy proofs. By contrast, the present book intends principally to develop those parts of the theory of the Laplace transformation, which are needed by mathematicians, physicists a,nd engineers in their daily routine work, but in complete generality and with detailed, exact proofs. The applications to other mathematical domains and to technical prob lems are inserted, when the theory is adequately developed to present the tools necessary for their treatment. Since the book proceeds, not in a rigorously systematic manner, but rather from easier to more difficult topics, it is suited to be read from the beginning as a textbook, when one wishes to familiarize oneself for the first time with the Laplace transforma tion. For those who are interested only in particular details, all results are specified in 'Theorems' with explicitly formulated assumptions and assertions. Chapters 1-14 treat the question of convergence and the mapping properties of the Laplace transformation. The interpretation of the transformation as the mapping of one function space to another (original and image functions) constitutes the dom inating idea of all subsequent considerations.

Manches ist ausführlicher dargestellt, anderes ganz neu hinzugekommen, wie die Kapitel über partielle Differentialgleichungen mit variablen Koeffizienten, Kompatibilitätsbedingungen für Randwertprobleme, Differenzengleichungen, Integralgleichungen im unendlichen Intervall, verschie dene mit Laplace-Transformation lösbare Integralgleichungen und ganze Funk tionen vom Exponentialtypus. Letztere bieten ein schier unerschöpfliches Feld für Anwendungen der Laplace-Transformation, und die dargestellten Unter suchungen möchten zu weiteren Forschungen auf diesem Gebiet anregen. Bei den Funktionalgleichungen sei besonders auf die Differenzengleichungen verwiesen, deren Behandlung mit Laplace-Transformation hier zum erstellmal in Buchform vollständig dargestellt ist. An Hand der Theorie der Kettenleiter, der Schrittregler und ähnlicher Probleme ist in letzter Zeit in der Technik ein neu es Interesse an den Differenzengleichungen erwacht, und für die hier vorliegenden Fragen dürfte insbesondere das 22. Band die Anwendungen, wobei es sich natürlich nicht nur um sogenannte «angewandte Mathematik»,…sondern um die verschiedensten Gebiete der reinen und angewandten Mathematik handelt, in welche die Laplace-Transformation als Hilfsmittel eingreift. Nachdem die Lösung von Funktionalgleichungen vermittels Laplace-Trans formation heutzutage Allgemeingut geworden ist, scheint mir dasjenige An wendungsgebiet, dessen Kenntnis vor allem verbreitet werden sollte, die Theorie der asymptotischen Entwicklungen zu sein. Aus diesem Grund sind diese als I. Teil an die Spitze des II. Bandes gestellt worden. Sowohl in der Theorie als in der Praxis spielen eigentlich die asymptotischen Entwicklungen eine grössere Rolle als die konvergenten Reihen, die den meisten Mathematikern und Inge nieuren aber viel geläufiger sind, weil sie im Unterricht der Hochschulen und in den Lehrbüchern einen erheblich breiteren Raum einnehmen als die asympto tischen Entwicklungen. Um die letzteren mehr in den Vordergrund zu schieben und um die erstaunlichen Möglichkeiten hervorzuheben, die die Laplace-Trans formation gerade auf diesem Gebiet eröffnet, habe ich die aus der ein- und zwei seitigen Laplace-Transformation (oder in anderem Gewand: der Mellin-Transfor mation) sowie aus dem komplexen Umkehrintegral fliessenden asymptotischen Methoden besonders weitgehend ausgearbeitet und durch viele Beispiele illu striert.
