Paperback. Condition: New. Rituals shape our social relations and are highly significant in all cultures. They define communities and make transformation possible by conveying security and support. In this exhibition catalogue, three up and coming artists - Baptiste Brossard, Helen Dowling, and Sara-Lena Maierhofer - explore rit…uals in their various contemporary forms. Based on predominantly time-based media such as photography and video, their works exemplify the ephemeral and performative character of ritual acts. This book accompanies an exhibition of the same name at Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen (Germany), and imparts a critical perspective on this elementary social force. It illustrates that rituals are necessarily subject to change yet can also strengthen personal and societal resilience in the present day.Text in English, German and French.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In the newly created painting series Headless, Marianna Simnett makes direct reference to Max Ernst's collage novel La Femme 100 tetes (The Hundred Headless Woman, 1929). In her dreamlike, at times nightmarish installation, she interweaves questions about gender social hierarchy, metamorphos…is, vulnerability, control, and pain. Touching on ancient mythology, she connects past and present within her multidisciplinary practice and creates her own alter egos. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: New. "Pain is whatever the experiencing person says it is, existing whenever he says it does." - Margo McCAaffery, 1968.The catalogue Beyond the Pain, published for the exhibition of the same name at Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen, addresses approaches to conquering pain within the visual arts. Twelve renowned…national and international artists demonstrate how negative physical and psychological experiences can be transformed into a positive attitude to life, and contributions from academics complement and discuss the overcoming of pain. The reception of art, just like the experience of pain, is as much informed by cultural-societal norms as it is a profoundly individual experience; to this end contemporary art is connected to a universal theme of humanity.Text in English and German.Published to accompany an exhibition at Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen (DE), 10 October 2020 to 30 May 2021.

Hardback. Condition: New.

Paperback. Condition: New. Based on the omnipresent term 'Industry 4.0', the publication #material4.0 reflects the interplay between the virtual world and the physical-real space. As part of the exhibition at Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen, 13 international artists, mostly 'digital natives', examine how computer dependent automation… and digitalisation are reflected in an art context. How does art output change from production to the aesthetic? How is this kind of media used in posing artistic questions? The positions of digital art pioneers fill us in. The publication documents the exhibition with numerous illustrations of works and a collection of complementary texts. Artists: Christian von Borries, Kate Cooper, JAK, Kanta Kimura, Mathilde Lavenne, Jung Lee, Florian Model, Manfred Mohr, Marco Schmitt, Lidia Sigle, Adam Slowik, Ivar Veermae, Ryszard Winiarski. With contributions by Manfred Mohr, Frieder Nake and Peter Weibel. Exhibition at the Galerie Stadt Sindelfingen (DE), 6 October 2018 - 3 March 2019.Text in English and German.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Pain is whatever the experiencing person says it is, existing whenever he says it does Margo McCaffrey 1968The experience of pain and the reception of art are as informed by cultural-societal norms as they are profoundly individual experiences. The artworks here not only reflect various dime…nsions of pain and coping with it but also invite you to try them out: in the protected space of the exhibition at Galerie Stadt Sin-delfingen, visitors can expose themselves to extreme situations, test their limits, and sharpen their resilience. This approach takes place initially from a distance, as we empathetically (or voyeuristically?) watch someone else cry or view American soldiers under going therapy for the traumas of war by means of animation. In addition a filmic encounter with a mass grave in Peru attempts to restore dignity to the victims. Living stones act as an example of the ability to survive, and a prosthetic leg becomes a weapon and in so doing its wearer a superhero. Finally we are able to put ourselves to the test: undergoing healing rituals, practising a backbend, being exposed to acoustic torture in a darkened room or subjecting ourselves to a hyperventilating artist expunging her boundaries. The book's texts illuminate various cultural aspects of how we deal with pain and the possible strategies in overcoming it and discuss the roles artistic work can take on in this context and how contemporary art is connected with this universal theme of humanity. Pain is whatever the experiencing person says it is, existing whenever he says it does Margo McCaffrey 1968 Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
