Hardbound. Condition: Fair. Limited Edition. Description: The entire text is printed on a very pale lavender tint paper with black, green and purple text, decorations, and illustrations. This reprints two books by F A Wislizenus, and includes a sketch of the author's life. A Journey to the Rocky Mountains was first published in an English translation in 1912. Memoir of a Tour to Northern Mexico was originally published in 1848. This edition was limited to 272 copies; this is number 57. BINDING/CONDITION: dark green binding with gilt; this is an EX-LIBRARY copy; with the presumably blank page in between the front free endpaper and the half-title page cut out; bookplate, 'withdrawn' stamps; otherwise in very good condition -- graded Fair due to library ownership. indexes. Illustrated endpapers. 8vo (9 inches tall). 165, 147 pages.

From Wikipedia: "Friedrich Adolph Wislizenus (first name sometimes spelled Frederick) (21 May 1810 23 September 1889) was German-born American MD, explorer and botanist. Wislizenus graduated in 1834 and sought employment in Paris yet upon finding none, he set sail for New York. Accompanying one of the expeditions of Rocky Mountain Fur Company he embarked on a journey to the west. With the hardy pioneers he traveled far into the North-West. Wislizenus joined a band of Flathead and Nez Perce Indians with whom he crossed the Rocky Mountains. With no guide he ventured back along the banks of Arkansas River to the border of Missouri. While engaged in publishing his memoirs, Wislizenus met his future wife, Lucy Crane, sister-in-law of George Perkins Marsh. Friedrich Adolph Wislizenus died on September 23, 1889 leaving a rich intellectual heritage.".
