Augusto FRANZOJ (San Germano Vercellese, 1848 - San Mauro Torinese, 1911) è stato un giornalista, esploratore e avventuriero italiano. Nel 1882…parte per l'Africa, con interessi esplorativi, ma senza appoggi o mezzi finanziari. Nonostante ciò, viaggiando da solo, con vari stratagemmi e con un piccolo aiuto ricevuto da Menelik, Franzoj riesce nell'impresa di recuperare i resti di Giovanni Chiarini da Ghera, impresa considerata rischiosa, per la quale Pietro Antonelli aveva previsto una spesa di ben 50.000 lire dell'epoca. Franzoj giungerà ad Assab con le spoglie del caduto il 28 agosto 1884.

La vita di Franzoj (S.Germano Vercellese 1849 - S. Mauro Torinese 1911) potrebbe fregiarsi indubbiamente dell'appellativo di spericolata, con fughe, denunce, sollevazioni, duelli e ogni genere di esagerazione possibile, compreso il suicidio con cui pose fine alla propria esistenza. La sua attività di corrispondente dall'Africa e il suo carisma gli valsero l'apprezzamento delle autorità militari nell'incarico di condurre le trattative per la restituzione dei prigionieri italiani dopo la battaglia di Adua del 1896.
