Paperback. Condition: New. It's not easy to eat well. To choose food wisely, you need to know where it comes from and how it's produced. As consumers, most of us don't know what we're getting and eating in our supermarkets and restaurants. When rumours and food scares circulate in the media, we panic. Since most of us know very little about the real state of agriculture today and the ways in which the global agricultural industry produces the foods that end up on our plates, we have no basis on which to make informed judgements. In this important new book, José Bové and François Dufour - two men from modest farming backgrounds who have become international icons of the resistance to global capitalism - unveil the workings of the agricultural industry today and lay down the principles for the creation of a new agriculture for the twenty-first century. Following on from their international bestseller The World is not For Sale, Bové and Dufour have joined forces again to build a constructive programme for the food of the future. They seek to make available to every citizen the facts they need in order to understand the crisis of agriculture today and to see how we can move beyond it. Presenting a positive agenda for a new kind of agriculture, they lay the foundations for a renewal of trust between farmers and citizen-consumers in a way that would bring food - and the production of food - back into the heart of modern society.…

Condition: Good. Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. A fascinating artifact of the turn-of-the-millennium anti-globalization and sustainable-food movements, the book grew directly from the 1999 protest at Millau, France, where sheep farmer Jose Bove and fellow agricultural activists dismantled a partly constructed McDonald's in protest against U.S. tariffs on Roquefort cheese and the increasing industrialization of agriculture. Structured as extended interviews with Bove and Dufour, it moves from their personal histories through factory farming, biodiversity, free trade, the WTO and sustainable agriculture, concluding with a chronology of the French farmers' movement and a ten-point charter for sustainable farming. Naomi Klein's foreword is particularly significant: the book appeared just after No Logo, while Klein and Bove were becoming internationally recognizable voices of the globalization protests. Contemporary evidence shows that The World Is Not for Sale quickly became associated with that literature - the Guardian included it in a 2001 list of leading anti-capitalist books, while Klein herself discussed Bove's 'World is Not for Sale' campaign in the New Left Review. Condition: Near Fine book / Near Fine dust jacket. The black boards remain exceptionally clean and sharp, with a firm, square binding and clean interior; no ownership markings are visible in the photographs. The jacket is complete and unclipped, retaining all three original currency prices. It shows modest shelf wear, chiefly rubbing/creasing at the spine ends and corners, a little surface scuffing, and some creasing along the upper edge. An attractive copy of a book whose physical production - black boards beneath that almost agricultural green jacket - is unusually distinctive. This is not the first edition of the work, since the French original appeared in 2000. It is, however, the first Verso English-language edition, 2001, and this ISBN, 1859846149, identifies the hardcover issue. Open Library specifically records the September 2001 Verso hardcover under this ISBN, while contemporary edition data describes it as the first-edition hardcover. A revised/new-afterword paperback followed in 2002. Published in 2001, it sits almost exactly at the intersection of three major early-2000s books/movements: Naomi Klein's No Logo, Eric Schlosser's Fast Food Nation, and the post-Seattle anti-globalization movement. A contemporary academic discussion specifically observed that Klein's foreword helped position Bove and Dufour's book beyond agriculture and food policy and into the broader contemporary-politics readership.…
