Francis Willughby (1635-1672) left behind a significant amount of research and material in the field of ornithology when his soul took flight, leaving behind the unpublished body of his short life's work. He was the first to scientifically classify birds, the same system used by Linnaeus 100 years later, and his various contributions as a naturalist in the seventeenth century are foundational. Working together, Willughby and John Ray, his Trinity College classmate, also pursued the study of insects and fish, works eventually edited and published posthumously by Ray. Attribution of authorship became blurred with the passage of time, with Willughby's contributions nearly completely eclipsed by the recognition Ray received in his lifetime. This work was originally published in Latin in 1676 and translated into English in 1678, and faithfully reproduced here in facsimile from the copy belonging to the Birmingham City Libraries. Limited to 400 copies, of which this is 36. Fine in very good original slipcase. Green cloth stamped in gilt, housed in plain black slipcase. The Descriptions Illustrated by Most Elegant Figures, nearly resembling the Live Birds Engraven in LXXVIII Copper Plates (illustrator).

First English edition of the first modern Ornithology, and 'one of the most important treatises on ornithology of all time' (Wood). It was translated and adapted from the Latin text of 1676 by John Ray, who added three additional plates and the three discourses on fowling, song birds, and falconry at the end. This work, begun jointly by Willughby and Ray and completed by Ray after the former's death in 1672, revolutionised ornithological taxonomy by organising species according to their physical characteristics. 'An important feature of the book was to be the engraved figures of birds, the cost being contributed by Willughby's widow. The Ornithologia, dated on the title page 1676 and carrying the arms of the Royal Society, if regarded only as a piece of book production, is magnificent. With its historical importance added it becomes one of the fairest monuments that mark the progress of scientific natural history' (Keynes p 54). As Keynes notes, the Latin edition was largely the work of Ray, as Willughby had died in 1672 and had left only rough field notes towards his ornithology. Ray effectively wrote the entire work, utilising not only Willughby's material but that of his own and other naturalists, and he provided the taxonomic system. The plates [numbered I to LXVIII], numbered XII, XXII and XLV are signed by F. H. van Houe, XXXVIIII, XLIIII signed by W. Faithorne, and XLVIII signed by W. Sherwin; the others are unsigned. Provenance: crest to the front board. Approximately 14 inches tall. On the spine, six raised bands with gilt rolls. In the panels, a double gilt fillet border surrounding gilt scrollwork. Title gilt to the second panel within a double gilt fillet border. Gilt roll to the edges of the boards. All edges of the text-block speckled red. Both boards starting at the upper edges, but still solid. With some rubbing and staining generally. With marginal worming at the lower edge from the front paste-down to Qq3, not affecting the text. Altogether a bright copy with fine margins (some 40mm at the fore, 30mm at the bottom and 20mm at the top) and an exceptional impression of the plates. On the title-page, the early ink inscription "Hindlater" (?). Willughby (1635-1672) was the pupil of Ray (1627-1705) at Trinity College, Cambridge, long a hub of natural science. Willughby revolutionized the taxonomy of birds by classing them not according to their edibility or personalities, but by the ways their habitat and behavior interacted with their physical forms. He died young, however, and it was his tutor Ray who brought his work to press, first in Latin (Ornithologiae libri tres. London, 1676) and here in English. Contemporary speckled calf, the spine in 7 compartments with 6 raised bands, morocco lettering-piece in one, the others decorated with small gilt tools (joints cracked, extremities a bit scuffed). Provenance: early annotations to captions; 19th-century printed paper lot number (355) at the foot of the spine. Second edition, a re-issue of the sheets of the 1686 first edition with the 'Index Piscium' added at the end, and printed identification slips pasted onto some of the plates. This copy retains the original 1686 title-page, more usually replaced by one dated 1743. Willughby met John Ray, his lecturer at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1653, they became lifelong friends collaborators in a number of natural history projects, including a plan ". to reduce the several Tribes of Things to a Method; and to give accurate Descriptions of the several Species, from a strict View of them. And forasmuch as Mr. Willughby's Genius lay chiefly to animals, therefore he undertook the Birds, Beasts, Fishes, and Insects, as Mr. Ray did the Vegetables". (Derham, Remains, 48). Sadly Willughby died in 1672, and Ray undertook to publish what he could of Willughby's incomplete history of animals. The "Ornithology" was published first in 1676, followed by this the "Historia Piscium" in 1786. Financed by the Royal Society, with assistance from John Fell, bishop of Oxford , the Society's celebrated President, Samuel Pepys, underwrote 79 of the engraved plates, and other Society members sponsored the remaining plates. Despite its importance and sumptuous production, the work was slow to sell. Royal Society members therefore received part of their salaries in copies of the book, and the Society authorised this re-issue in 1740 (published in 1743). The "History of insects" was the last of Willughby's works to be published, although Ray did not live to see this project through. It was published in 1710 as "Historia insectorum" on behalf of the Royal Society, edited by William Derham. Keynes, Ray 46-47; Nissen ZBI 4417 (calling for 188 plates); Wing W-2879.

With title page in red and black ink; preface; text in 3 books with 2 plates of bird traps bound in, and 2 tables which serve as early identification keys; an appendix; summary of falconry; index and 78 plates of birds (including the dod…o) at the rear. This is the first English edition translated from the original Latin which was published in 1676, four years after Willughby's death by his friend and colleague John Ray. It marks one of the first attempts to take a rational, scientific approach to classifying birds. It is a matter of debate, and current research, as to whether Willughby or Ray played a greater part in its development. Ray supervised the publication. The illustrations were commissioned from a number of sources and some birds are depicted twice where the initial image was not very good.This copy lacks the original endpapers - perhaps lost during the later rebinding - but is complete including the additional falconry material. There is some browning to page edges. Some of the plates have some fraying at the very edges where the paper is more fragile. This is most marked in plates LXXVI and LXXVIII - which also has a slight crease.

Add to basketFirst edition - a tall, wide-margined copy on thick paper - of this important illustrated work on ornithology, "the first systematic attempt to comprehensively itemise the British avifauna" (Callahan, p.28), from the library of the Earls of Macclesfield. The two authors, Francis Willughby (1635-1672) and John Ray (1627-1705), me…t at Cambridge, and spent a few years touring Britain and Europe and collecting fresh data, through observation and dissection, on the hundreds of bird species featured in this book. Willughby was alone credited as an author, as a posthumous tribute. Ornithologiae libri tres "had an unprecedented scientific rigour for its time and classified birds according to their detailed physical characteristics, including plumage. dividing [them] into landbirds and waterbirds, and using their observed physical characteristics to further subdivide into classes" (Callahan, p. 28). The chapters discuss the outward and inward appearance of birds, their age, and generation, followed by a catalogue with detailed information on each species and genus, and by 77 magnificent engravings. Appended are chapters on mythical birds, falconry, and Faroese seabirds. The work was also published in English in 1678. Provenance: Stephen C. Massey. ESTC R27077; Wing W2879. D. Title in red and black, woodcut arms of the Royal Society of London. Contemporary mottled calf, raised bands, compartments elaborately gilt, second with gilt-lettered morocco label, late 18th-century small gilt-stamped crowns to corners and blind roll of tendrils along joints, 18th-century endpapers, outer edges gilt, all edges marbled. Engraved bookplate and manuscript shelf mark of the Earls of Macclesfield's library on front pastedown. Ownership inscription "John White" at head of title, one manuscript note in his hand which appears to place him in Suffolk. Binding restored, extremities and front joint recently refurbished, lower endband repaired, first recto (blank) and title a bit dusty, very occasional light foxing or finger marks, minor old repairs to lower margin on blank verso of handful of plates, else fresh and clean: a very good copy.

Armorial bookplate of George Wilbraham 1779 â" 1852 and, his Library plate of Delamere House, Northwich, Chesire below…to the front paste down, Wilbraham a Whig MP and Fellow of The Royal Society. a recent note to lower edge of the front-end paper noting the book was rebound in 1983 by Alan Farrant Cambridge. The binding has been restored to a high standard using the original full calf boards and spine relayed. The contents and plates clean, from page 56 to page 400 there are numerous marginal notes in ink in a near contemporary legible hand on observations of birds, habitat, bird folklore etc, there is no indication to the writer of the notes but would assume it was George Wilbraham. . A Summary Of Falconry collected out of several authors, pp 397 â" 437. The birds used in falconry are found in plates I- IX. The chapter III Of the Several kinds of Eagles there are marginal notes, one relating to incidents of a child being found in an Eagles nest. There is also a loose coloured engraving of a Tame Bustard in two "attitudes" paper size approx. 33cm x 25cm image size 13.5cmx 13.5cm a note below says it's an engraving, but I would say it was a watercolour. With a further note SIGNEND by Col Hamond "I think this the best". A very good clean copy of a celebrated early book on ornithology, with the benefit of the marginal notes.
