7 parts in one volume. 8vo. [viii], 308, [20] pp. Printer's device on title (The goddess of wisdom, Minerva, with her spear, shield (Aegis with Medusa's head), and owl (wisdom & insight)), woodcut headpieces, initial letters, and tailpieces. Original full wrappers; recased, new pastedowns. Near fine. [JWRB] History of the Venetian Republic as written by Foscarini, a work that the author died before it was finished, whereupon his brother Sebastiano Foscarini took charge and produced the posthumous editions, the first of which was printed in 1696. / Foscarini deserves "credit for having distanced himself from the excessive virtuosity that tainted the writings of his predecessors. Indeed, even today, his work appears dignified and clear, respectful of truth, of the connections between facts, and of the true significance of the events described. Furthermore, he is always very soberâ"as the setting and nature of the work demandedâ"in his critical judgments and assessments, from which, however, the author's personal views emerge, inspired by a realistic vision of the modest role now assigned to the Republic in the context of international politics, dominated by the figure of Louis XIV and the Ottoman-Habsburg duel. As for the internal structure of the state, F. clearly leans toward an aristocratic vision, opposing the oligarchic ambitions of the most influential and wealthy families. In short, his figure is typical of the great "republican" tradition, brimming with prudent common sense, both with regard to himself and the community. He died suddenly in his palace in Venice on May 31, 1692."

Large quarto volume, pp. [8], 484, [28]. Contemporary stiff vellum binding with fore-edges, manuscript title to spine, sprinkled edges. Fine engraved vignette depicting Minerva on the title page. Large full-page portrait of the author preceding the first book. Ornamental headpieces, tailpieces and initials. A beautiful, complete and wide-margined copy, with a few traces of ininfluent worming which do not affect the legibility. An uncommon work, in excellent state of preservation. First edition of this celebrated history of Venice, a continuation of the work of Giovan Battista Nani, written by the distinguished Venetian historian and politician Michele Foscarini. Passionate about literature, he attended the Accademia degli Incogniti from an early age and enjoyed a brilliant political career. He advanced with considerable skill, and in 1676, despite his humble origins, was appointed Savio del Consiglio, subsequently holding a number of other important offices within the government of the Serenissima. We know his character and political thought chiefly through the Historia, in which the author refers to himself in the third person and records numerous speeches delivered before the Council of the Savi, offering a vivid impression of a careful and moderate politician, particularly inclined to keep Venice out of conflicts. The Historia della Repubblica veneta comprises seven books, covering the years 1669 to 1690. It was first published in 1696 under the care of his brother Sebastiano, as the author had died without having been able to revise and adequately complete the work.
