Paperback. Condition: New. If you have ever felt too shy, too old, or too plain for adventure - In Spite of Myself is for you.Growing up as a painfully timid child in Kenya, Mary Fogarty discovers that independence is not something you are born with - it is something you swim towards, stumble upon, and seize when nobody is watching. Sometime journalist, sometime travel guide, always an outsider (and always a swimmer), Fogarty looks back on decades of spontaneous solo travel across five continents with self-deprecating honesty, warmth, and razor-sharp wit.Wherever she journeys - from Milan to Mexico, Perth to Peru, mountains to souks - she feels marked by difference. Her teenage self is branded an African savage at a British convent school; in Italy she is a country bumpkin in the city yet the only foreigner in the village; in Australia, the lone Pom in a Macedonian community; in Spain, the only single expat among couples. Sometimes following love, sometimes finding it once she arrives, Fogarty flings herself into relationships both magnificent and disastrous - with a cast of unlikely characters no novelist would dare invent.Gawp as she meets an Egyptian doctor on the night train to Cairo; takes off across the desert with a Syrian bus driver in search of a hotel that serves alcohol; shares a sleeping bag with a Sherpa on the descent from Everest to cure her altitude sickness; encounters an Omar Sharif lookalike in Australia, only to discover he is sleeping in his office and growing marijuana in the flowerpots - and is nearly murdered by the new girlfriend of her Berber ex-lover in Marrakech.Simultaneously intensely personal and irresistibly universal, In Spite of Myself is for anyone who worries about being alone - and proof that there is always a way, and you can do it on your own.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In Spite of Myself is an eclectic, passionate travel memoir about life and love across many countries and one that will strike a chord with many a reader. Mary Fogarty grows up in Kenya, a painfully shy child, timid and fearful of all that Africa holds. Only through swimming does she gain some confidence to expand her boundaries and an independent life begins. Sometime journalist and travel guide but always an outsider (and always a swimmer) Mary Fogarty looks back on the thrills and spills of decades' worth of independent, spontaneous travel. Wherever she journeys, from Milan to Mexico and Perth to Peru, and from mountains and men to Speedos and souks, she feels marked by difference. Her teenage self is regarded as an African savage at her British convent school; in Italy, she is a country bumpkin in the city, yet the only foreigner in the village and, in both, the sole woman who drinks; in Australia, she is the lone 'Pom' in a Macedonian community; in Spain, the only single expat amid a community of couples. Sometimes following love, sometimes finding it once she arrives, Fogarty also celebrates the intensity of emotional and physical attraction flinging herself into relationships both good and bad, often with unlikely characters. Gawp as Fogarty meets an Egyptian doctor on the night train to Cairo; takes off across the desert with a Syrian bus driver to find a hotel where alcohol is served; shares a sleeping bag with a Sherpa to cure her altitude sickness on the descent from Everest; encounters an Omar Sharif lookalike in Australia, only to discover he is sleeping in his office, and growing marijuana in the office flower bed; and is nearly murdered by the new girlfriend of her Berber ex-lover in Marrakech. Simultaneously intensely personal and irresistibly universal, In Spite of Myself is for anyone who worries about being alone, who thinks they are too old or too plain or too shy to have adventures. As Mary makes clear through exhilarating, amusing storytelling, there is always a way and you can do it on your own. AUTHOR: After growing up in Kenya, Mary Fogarty has travelled whenever she can, acquiring languages and loving inappropriate men along the road. She spent time in Mexico in her early twenties and lived in Milan in her late twenties, teaching English. She has worked in publishing on and off since the 1990s and was a freelance medical journalist for over 20 years, but never stopped travelling. For four years she commuted to Perth (Australia), and then she switched to Spain, where she worked in a wacky hotel. Since 2014 she has worked in Marrakech (Morocco) as a travel guide, editor and translator. A Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society, she is the presenter of monthly meetings at The Globetrotters Club, edits their newsletter, Globe, and regularly gives talks there about her travels. In Spite of Myself is her first book. In Spite of Myself: is an eclectic, passionate travel memoir about life and love - from mountains and men to Speedos and souks - across many countries. From Milan to Mexico, and Africa to Australia, journalist, swimmer and perpetual outsider Mary Fogarty revisits the thrills and spills of decades' worth of independent, spontaneous travel. Mary Ellen Fogarty was a scientist, writer and explorer whose travels took her on a search for knowledge and meaning into deep realms of both the physical and spiritual worlds. Born on January 16, 1957 in Troy, N.Y., she grew up in Rutherford, N.J. After earning a B.A. in anthropology from the University of Michigan in 1979, she began the extensive traveling and field work which continued for the rest of her life. She started her professional career by working on an extensive series of university-sponsored archaeological excavations in the Southeast, including ones in Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina. She was awarded an M.A. in anthropology from the University of Tennessee in 1990 and had several scientific papers published or presented to conferences. Mary moved to Alaska in 1987 to work as an anthropologist for the Bureau of Indian Affairs ANCSA office in Anchorage, and later for the state Department of Fish and Game in Bethel. Her work took her above the Arctic Circle and to all parts of Alaska, and gave her an intimate familiarity with Alaskan Native cultures, including those of the Yup'ik, Inupiat, Athabaskan, Aleut and Alutiq peoples. She was deeply involved in conflict resolution and volunteered her time in Alaska prisons through the Hands of Peace organization. After seeing firsthand the consequences of the lack of adequate medical care in remote areas, she decided to pursue a career in medicine and enrolled in premed courses at the University of Alaska at Anchorage. A climbing accident on Ptarmigan Peak near Anchorage on June 29, 1997 cut short these aspirations. Mary's ashes were scattered in Chugach State Park and in the Aleutian Islands. Her full but too-brief life was celebrated at more than a dozen ceremonies, and memorials to her have been dedicated in Alaska and Tennessee.
