Seller: Winding Road Books, Templeton, CA, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Minus. Reprint. This Literary Guild of America reprint edition was published in the same year as the 1st Edition. This copy is almost 100 years old, has been well taken care of and is in fine condition. Its construction is unlike most of the poorly made book club editions. The buckram covered boards, high quality paper and matching top stain add up to a handsome edition possibly as desirable and rare as the first edition. The text block is solid, clean and square. Pictorial endpapers are clear of markings with small previous owner's bookplate under front flap. Spine tight, boards rigid and tips pointed. Slight push to spine ends. There is no book club deboss on the rear cover. The jacket is in very good minus condition and has some closed tearing along backstrip seams and chipping/loss at spine ends and some edges. It looks sleek in a shiny new plastic cover. Shipping box is suitable for wrapping with a non-price listed purchase order inside along with biodegradable packing.

Reprint. Condition: Gut. pp. 108-116. [For Gnomon]. From the estate of the classical philologist Ernst Vogt, editor-in-chief of the journals *Rheinisches Museum für Philologie* (19591967) and *Gnomon* (19701999; co-editor from 1975). - A fine, clean copy. - From the text: G. Highet, Juvenal the Satirist, Oxford, 1954, p. 303 does not add anything to what was already claimed to be evidence that Eugenius of Toledo was acquainted with Juvenals work. Eugenius 40.4 is compared with Juvenal 8.25 iustitiaeque tenax and Eugenius 77.3 is compared with Juvenal 9.124 utile consilium. Iustitiaeque tenax recalls Horace, Odes 3.3.1 iustum et tenacem propositi, Apul. Apol. 102 iustitiae pertinacem, Eutrop. 9.11.12 iusti tenax and Amm. Marc. 27.8.10 iusti tenacem ; and the expression utile consilium is found in Cic. De Off. 3.97, Livy 33.35.3, Vai. Max. 1.8.10, 6.5.ext.2, Curt. 7.4.14, Sen. De Ben. 6.33.1 and Mart. 5.9.18. There is better evidence than that. With Eugenius 4.3 Christum pectore gestat compare Juvenal 13.198 suum gesture in pectore testem and with Eugenius 7.10 castiget uentrem compare Juvenal 14.126 uentres modio castigat iniquo.
