Jacques Rancière, pratiquer l'égalité entend reconstituer les moments forts du cheminement intellectuel multiple menant à ces idées : sa rupture avec le marxisme althussérien et son exploration des archives ouvrières du 19e siècle ; sa fascination pour le projet de l'émancipation intellectuelle du "maître ignorant" Joseph Jacotot ; la constitution de sa pensée politique centrée sur l'égalité et la démocratie ; et, finalement, l'élaboration de sa pensée esthétique. Ce cheminement n'aboutit pas à un seul concept d'égalité, mais oscille entre trois conceptions de l'égalité - égalités intellectuelle, politique et sensible -, lesquelles impliquent de réévaluer la pensée ranciérienne de la démocratie moderne, ouvrant sur de nouveaux potentiels conceptuels.
