As these examples illustrate, political corruption is often associated to a variety of instances of abuse of power that either derive from a vicious trait of individual character, or develop within deeply dysfunctional institutions. To Emanuela Ceva and Maria Paola Ferretti, however, this piecemeal view is inadequate: individual and institutional instances of political corruption have a common root that we can understand only by treating corruption and anticorruption as a matter of a public ethics of office. Political corruption is the Trojan horse that undermines public institutions from within via an interrelated action of officeholders. Even well-designed and legitimate institutions can veer off track if the officeholders fail through their conduct to uphold a public ethics of office accountability.This book offers an analytically rigorous definition of political corruption. It also investigates the common normative root of its two manifestations--corrupt individual character, and corrupt institutional mechanisms--as a relationally wrongful practice that consists of an unaccountable use of the power of office by officeholders in public institutions. From this perspective, political corruption must be understood from within, for it is an internal enemy of public institutions that can only be opposed by mobilizing the officeholders to remain accountable and mutually answerable for their conduct. In this way, anticorruption calls on the officeholders' responsibility to work together to maintain an interactively just institutional system.

Il dialettico coesistere di elementi simbolici e di indagini sul reale, di visionarie prefigurazioni e piena padronanza della tecnica è alla base dell'operosità di una personalità caleidoscopica, caratterizzata da molteplici valenze che emergono con vivida chiarezza a seconda del taglio critico, di volta in volta, privilegiato. Nella vasta attività di Michelangelo - pittore, scultore, architetto e poeta - possono essere infatti selezionati alcuni elementi rispetto ad altri, che in ogni caso convergono a definire un profilo compiuto che si presenta in forme assolutamente atemporali, riferibile a una peculiare capacità di lettura e restituzione di temi complessi - come la condizione umana, la religione, la guerra - mai semplicistica e sempre capace di dar corpo a opere dal valore universale. L'esposizione permanente del Carmi comunica una selezione di tali tematiche e suggestioni, creando un itinerario fisico e concettuale originale e chiarificando alcuni aspetti dell'intensa e multiforme attività del Buonarroti: il binario principale è rappresentato dal profondo rapporto con la materia, litica in primis, che passa attraverso capolavori architettonici o scultorei come il Davide che proprio a Carrara trova la sua più autentica concretizzazione. E Carrara, che ieri come oggi, accoglie artisti da ogni parte del mondo, non poteva non volgere il proprio sguardo anche agli intrecci fra Michelangelo e la Contemporaneità, cercando di illuminare e annodare fili sottili, e talvolta trascurati, fra il portato dell'eredità del maestro e i molteplici esiti dell'arte del XX secolo. Un progetto museologico che abbia al centro Michelangelo è un'operazione molto complessa in assoluto, ma ancora di più quando debba assolvere alla funzione di selezionare aspetti che illustrino il legame fra l'operosità artistica e il territorio, in orizzonte cronologico ampio, tenendo al contempo ben presente il ruolo assolto dal curatore, ovvero quello di cerniera fra ricerca scientifica e divulgazione. Quando si persegue come obiettivo l'ampliamento dell'accesso alla conoscenza di temi così articolati e stratificati è fondamentale definire un asse principale sui cui strutturare l'itinerario. La definizione di focus mirati su argomenti specifici, che possano trasversalmente evidenziare peculiarità, caratteri denotativi o permanenze e innovazioni, materializza l'approccio curatoriale dell'esposizione permanente del CARMI, che vorrebbe in primis indurre il pubblico alla riflessione. L'opera michelangiolesca viene infatti decostruita in singole aree tematiche, per consentire esperienze soggettive differenti elaborate individualmente dal visitatore, che si confronta con fotografie, video, ologrammi, fac-simili dei disegni del Buonarroti e di altri artisti, ricostruzioni tridimensionali e opere originali. La ricomposizione, nel procedere della narrazione espositiva, dei molteplici tasselli che compongono l'arte di Michelangelo è essa stessa un'operazione di conoscenza, che il visitatore è inviato ad esperire per forgiare una personale e specifica chiave d'accesso allo straordinario universo michelangiolesco.
