Tuttavia, a dispetto dell'ossimoro, si manifesta un grande successo popolare, attestato dalle molte riscritture, reintepretazioni e reinvenzioni. Il presente studio, attraverso un'analisi attenta e puntuale, offre una mappatura insolita e innovativa delle molteplici rivisitazioni dell'opera, inficiando l'idea di una scarsa affinità tra il mito di Faust e la cultura italiana. C'est cette géographie artistique fort complexe que cet ouvrage tente de retracer. La première partie est consacrée à l'interaction entre les cours françaises et le foyer parisien au temps du gothique international (1380-1435). La deuxième s'intéresse au mode de diffusion de l'ars nova (le langage illusionniste des Flamands) et à son assimilation sélective dans le royaume de France, au temps de Charles VII et de Louis XI (1435-1483). La troisième enfin met en évidence la standardisation d'un langage proprement français, fondé sur le modèle de Jean Fouquet, et développé sous Charles VIII et Louis XII (1483-1515).
