Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - A key personality in the collection and reworking of the classical philosophical sources for a non-specialized, yet cultivated audience, the orator and philosopher Themistius (317-389) is a case in point for the study of the transmission of Ancient Philosophy to later eras. He consciously set for himself the goal to present Aristotle's doctrines in a simplified manner, thus providing a powerful model for the inculturation of Greek philosophy in other linguistic areas and religious landscapes. Themistius and the Power of Words, with its twin focus on Themistius' thought and on the impact of his ideas on Arabic and Latin-speaking areas, provides a survey of Themistius' distinctive position and a balanced view of his intellectual deeds, both as an orator and as an Aristotelian scholar. In doing so, it explores topics such as Themistius' philosophical interpretation of the nature and role of the First Cause, the Law and the order of the cosmos, the human mind, and the human assimilation to God from the point of view of a cross-analysis of historical, literary, and philosophical aspects. This book shows that Themistius' philosophical interpretations and 'original' developments, and their legacy are better understood against the background of the rise of a new conception of philosophy in what we label nowadays 'Late Antiquity'.…

Brossura. Condition: new. A cura di Coda E. Pisa, 2023; br., pp. 481, ill., cm 12x24. (Greco, Arabo, Latino. Le Vie del Sapere. Studi. 9). Libro.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. English summary: This festschrift honors Henri Hugonnard-Roche, one of the preeminent scholars of the transmission of knowledge between languages in late Antiquity. Examining intellectual and philosophical transfer and translation from Greek to Syriac to Arabic to Latin, the studies reflect the rich world of medieval intellectual translation across linguistic and religious boundaries. …

Summary This is the first book length examining closely Themistius' philosophical thought and his understanding of Aristotelian philosophy. Themistius, well known as an eloquent orator and political personality of Constantinople during the fourth century ad, is an influential commentator on works of Aristotle. By assessing both of these aspects of Themistius' intellectual accomplishments, the present work explores and contextualizes his thought in both his paraphrases of the works of Aristotle and in his orations. Themistius' interpretation of Aristotelian thought, deeply influential in both the Arab and Latin worlds, and his strategy for teaching Aristotle, even outside the professional schools of philosophy, are major foci of this study. In particular, this work explicates Themistius' understanding of the nature and causality of the First Principle, of the cosmic order, and of the human soul and intellect. It argues that Themistius' approach reflects not only the systematization imparted by Alexander of Aphrodisias to the doctrines of Aristotle, but also the increasing, though oftentimes silent, influence of Plotinus. This is evident in the consideration of the three philosophical issues of God, cosmos, and soul analysed in Themistius, which reveal the preponderance of Plotinus' philosophy reflected in the Themistian orations. Concomitantly, it explores how Themistius' teachings proved decisive in the medieval understanding of Aristotle both among Arabic and Hebrew readers, as well as in the universities of Latin Europe. As such, this study challenges our understanding of philosophy in fourth-century Constantinople. TABLE OF CONTENTS Preface, by R.C. Taylor Introduction Chapter 1. Themistius.
