Add to basketCondition: Very Good. First Edition. Edward Reynolds An Explication of the Hundreth and Tenth Psalme (1632) Author: Edward Reynolds, D.D. (15991676) Title: An Explication of the Hundreth and Tenth Psalme Publication: London: Imprinted by Felix Kyngston for Robert Bostocke, 1632 Format: Small Quarto 7.5"x6" Binding: Beautiful mod…ern period-style half-calf binding with raised bands and gilt labels; sympathetic to 17th-century style. Condition: Very good; clean, toned paper with occasional age-marks; handsome modern binding; early ink inscription on title page; crisp text block. A rare 1632 first edition of Edward Reynolds' powerful Puritan exposition of Psalm 110 one of the most cited Old Testament passages in early Protestant theology concerning the Messianic kingship and priesthood of Christ: "The severall Heads of Christian Religion therein contained; touching the Exaltation of Christ, the Scepter of his Kingdome His Priesthood, Victories, Sufferings, and Resurrection." This work consists of a series of sermons preached at Lincoln's Inn, one of the Inns of Court in London, where Reynolds taught some of the most influential legal and political minds of the period. Reynolds later became a leading figure in the English Reformation and the Restoration era a Westminster Assembly divine and eventually Bishop of Norwich under Charles II. His writing reflects the doctrinal strength and devotional piety associated with the early English Puritan movement. Historical Significance Psalm 110 is central to Reformation Christology, frequently quoted in the New Testament. Reynolds' exposition exemplifies early 17th-century English Protestant preaching and the theological defense of: The Kingship of Christ The Priesthood of Christ (after the order of Melchizedek) Resurrection doctrine Church and kingdom authority This is an early and substantial published work by Reynolds, predating his later sermons and episcopal writings. Reynolds stands as an important bridge figure between Puritan and Anglican traditions, refusing to conform under Cromwell, yet later restored to prominence after the monarchy returned. Printer Felix Kyngston and bookseller Robert Bostocke were prominent London stationers associated with early Stuart religious printing. A very handsome presentation of a theologically important and increasingly scarce early-Stuart Puritan work. . Beautiful modern period-style half-calf binding with raised bands and gilt labels.
