Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - In this collection of articles, an environmental scientist traces a journey through the wilderness of environmental politics. In his travels, Dr. Edward Krug developed a unique perspective on vital areas of the environmental issues, making him critical of both sides of the environmental debate. Environment Betrayed delves into numerous environmental issues and into environmentalism itself, presenting both Dr. Krug's opinions and the well-documented opinions of others who were active participants in the environmental arena. Dr. Krug has worked as an environmental scientist since the early eighties, and much of the research and information included here originated in the eighties and nineties. Despite this gap of time, defenders of modern Western civilization don't seem to recognize the nature of the environmental war, let alone many of its details. By raising issues, environmentalists also define the battlefield-that is, the context of thought. Krug cites credible sources on both sides of the debate with varying perspectives on where things stand in this conflict. Only by gaining a clear understanding of what's at stake can we truly grasp the numerous environmental issues swirling around us and what they will mean for our future.…

Add to basketSoft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition. Copy of Cora Du Bois (1903-1991), an American cultural anthropologist and Harvard and Cornell University professor who specialized in the study of Indigenous and Asian cultures. With her background in social science, she worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. Signed by Du Bois in black or dark blue ink in upper-right corner on front cover: "Cora Du Bois, please return." Original publisher's gray paper wrappers with dark green lettering printed on front cover. No lettering on spine. 8" x 10 1/4." 104 pages, complete. Covers are clean and intact overall but have browning on spine, band of discoloration at top edge on front, light age toning throughout, slight bumping to corners, surface tear on back, and a small split at tail of spine. A Very Good copy. This is a historically significant government report prepared by Edward B. Marks, Jr. Also credited on the title page are the United States Department of the Interior, War Relocation Authority (WRA), U.S. Secretary of the Interior Julius A. Krug, and WRA Director Dillon S. Myer. This 1946 report is a descriptive overview of the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter, the first refugee center in the United States and the only one to exist in the U.S. to date. The center was established on June 12, 1944 in Oswego, New York by executive order of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The overview is approximately chronological and gives background on the creation of the refugee shelter, daily life for refugees at the center, and some specific events associated with the center. In August 1944, 982 refugees, the total population who would come to the center, were admitted to Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter. 93% of the refugees were Jewish. The rest were of Yugoslavian, Austrian, Polish, German, or Czech descent or from other ethnic backgrounds. Refugees at the shelter lacked freedom and only received basic necessities (the report acknowledges the well-intended aims of the shelter but also points out its shortcomings). Local residents tried to give supplies to the refugees but access to the shelter was severely limited. Eventually, refugees were permitted to see visitors. The shelter closed in February 1946. Most of the refugees wanted to stay in the U.S., but some returned to Europe. The center was managed by the WRA, an agency created by Executive Order 9102 on March 18, 1942 by Roosevelt and terminated by President Harry S. Truman on June 26, 1946. WRA was the agency that had implemented the internment or incarceration of Japanese Americans and other people of Japanese ancestry during WWII.…
