Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the administrative intricacies of the War Relocation Authority (WRA), a U.S. government agency established during World War II to oversee the relocation and internment of Japanese Americans. The author meticulously examines the WRA's complex structure, policies, and procedures, offering a comprehensive account of the agency's management and operations. The narrative unfolds against the backdrop of wartime anxieties and racial prejudice, exploring the challenges faced by the WRA in balancing national security concerns with the civil liberties of those under its jurisdiction. The author delves into critical aspects of the WRA's work, including the establishment and administration of relocation centers, the intricacies of evacuee employment and leave procedures, and the eventual closure of the centers. Through detailed accounts of budgetary constraints, personnel management, and logistical hurdles, the book sheds light on the WRA's efforts to navigate a politically charged and rapidly evolving situation. The author's insights provide a nuanced understanding of the WRA's role in one of the most controversial chapters of American history, revealing the complexities and challenges of balancing administrative efficiency with humanitarian considerations in times of crisis. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Copy of Cora Du Bois (1903-1991), an American cultural anthropologist and Harvard and Cornell University professor who specialized in the study of Indigenous and Asian cultures. Signed by Du Bois in black or dark blue ink in upper-right corner on front cover: "Cora Du Bois, please return." Original publisher's gray paper wrappers with dark green lettering printed on front cover. No lettering on spine. 8" x 10 1/4." 167 pages, complete. References Quotes in back. Some leaves are stuck together at top or unopened. Pages are clean and intact overall except for faint dampstains mostly limited to edges of text block, light age toning, and bumped corners. Covers are clean and intact overall but have browning on spine, browning or age toning on front and back, small stains on back, a few wrinkles, and slightly bumped corners. A Very Good copy. This is a historically significant government report prepared by historian Ruth E. McKee. Also credited on title page are the United States Department of the Interior, War Relocation Authority (WRA), U.S. Secretary of the Interior Julius A. Krug, and WRA Director Dillon S. Myer. This 1946 report is a research paper by Ruth E. McKee in which she adamantly defends people of Japanese ancestry, gives a history of Japanese immigration to the U.S., and explains that racism was a driving factor in the internment or incarceration of Japanese Americans and other people of Japanese ancestry in the U.S. during WWII. The following are the titles of the report's three parts and constituent chapters: "Part I: The West Coast's Least Known and Most Misrepresented Minority: Early Voyages from Japan to the New World; The Immigrant Generation and the California Racists; The Population Myth; The Birth Rate; Dual Citizenship; Japanese Language Schools; Distribution of Japanese Americans," "Part II: Interim; December 7, 1941-December, 1942-February 19, 1942: The Beginning; The Rallying of the Racists; First Round to the Racists," and "Part III: Triumph for the Racists: 'At the Discretion of the Appropriate Military Commander'; The Case for the Government." During WWII, about 110,000 to 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry were incarcerated in ten internment camps under Executive Order 9066 which was signed into law by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt on February 19, 1942. About 2/3 of the Japanese internees were U.S. citizens; the rest were non-citizens. Internees were forcibly removed from their homes if they did not go willingly and were only permitted to take what they could carry with them to the internment camps. Executive Order 9066 targeted the Western states of the U.S. where most of the Japanese internees lived. The WRA was created by Executive Order 9102 on March 18, 1942 by Roosevelt and terminated by President Harry S. Truman on June 26, 1946. On December 18, 1944, the U.S. Supreme Court handed down the decision that the internment or incarceration of Japanese people under Executive Order 9066 was unconstitutional because it detained loyal citizens without cause. By the end of 1945, nine of the ten internment camps were shut down. Tule Lake War Relocation Center remained open until March 20, 1946. In the 1970s, President Jimmy Carter's administration found there was little evidence of disloyalty among Japanese people in the U.S. and their internment was based on racism. President Ronald Reagan signed the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 which formally apologized to Japanese internees and authorized payment of $20,000 to former detainees who were still alive. The Civil Liberties Act expressly stated that Japanese internment was caused by "race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership.".…

A Very Good copy. This is a historically significant government report prepared by Edward B. Marks, Jr. Also credited on the title page are the United States Department of the Interior, War Relocation Authority (WRA), U.S. Secretary of the Interior Julius A. Krug, and WRA Director Dillon S. Myer. This 1946 report is a descriptive overview of the Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter, the first refugee center in the United States and the only one to exist in the U.S. to date. The center was established on June 12, 1944 in Oswego, New York by executive order of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The overview is approximately chronological and gives background on the creation of the refugee shelter, daily life for refugees at the center, and some specific events associated with the center. In August 1944, 982 refugees, the total population who would come to the center, were admitted to Fort Ontario Emergency Refugee Shelter. 93% of the refugees were Jewish. The rest were of Yugoslavian, Austrian, Polish, German, or Czech descent or from other ethnic backgrounds. Refugees at the shelter lacked freedom and only received basic necessities (the report acknowledges the well-intended aims of the shelter but also points out its shortcomings). Local residents tried to give supplies to the refugees but access to the shelter was severely limited. Eventually, refugees were permitted to see visitors. The shelter closed in February 1946. Most of the refugees wanted to stay in the U.S., but some returned to Europe. The center was managed by the WRA, an agency created by Executive Order 9102 on March 18, 1942 by Roosevelt and terminated by President Harry S. Truman on June 26, 1946. WRA was the agency that had implemented the internment or incarceration of Japanese Americans and other people of Japanese ancestry during WWII.…

The final report on the relocation, internment, and incarceration of Japanese immigrants and of Japanese Americans following the Japanese Navy's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. While the book's chronology begins in January 1942, the chapter called "The Price of Prejudice" notes that the FBI reported on December 11 that more than 1200 Japanese aliens had already been arrested. This report, like many of the post-War publications by the staff of the War Relocation Authority, is critical of the decision to intern the Japanese and is sympathetic to the hardships Japanese and Japanese Americans faced. The book also covers the little-remembered activities of the Farm Security Administration and the Federal Reserve Bank, which was responsible for internees' property. xvi, 212 pages. Illustrated with halftone photographs. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in the original printed wrappers.…

Near Fine with light creasing, light wear and toning.Nisei is a Japanese term used in North and South American meaning "second generation," specifically referring to ethnically Japanese children born in the Americas to Japanese-born parents who immigrated there. This pamphlet details the heroic acts of the two Japanese-American combat units in World War II, the 442nd Combat Team and the 100th Battalion. A scarce pamphlet issued by the War Relocation Authority, the American governmental agency overseeing the mass internment of Japanese-Americans, often mentioning relocation camps, making note of soldiers who volunteered directly from them to join the US Army.…

Contact seller5-star sellerUnited States Department of the Interior, War Relocation Authority. The Relocation Program (1946) documents the federal administration of Japanese American incarceration during World War II and provides direct evidence of the government's policies governing camp closure, dispersal, and postwar resettlement. Issued immediately after the end of the war, the report outlines the institutional framework that shaped the forced removal and subsequent reintegration of Japanese American communities, including Issei and Nisei populations. It records the structural barriers faced by formerly incarcerated individuals, including discrimination in housing and employment, and situates these experiences within broader federal policy. The text supports research into wartime civil liberties, Asian American history, and the long term social and economic consequences of incarceration under Executive Order 9066. The Relocation Program. Washington, D.C.: United States Government Printing Office, 1946. Government-issued softcover report produced by the War Relocation Authority. The volume includes a detailed "Statement of Facts" section describing the effects of incarceration, noting that "mental suffering has been caused by the forced mass evacuation," and documenting "an almost complete destruction of financial foundations built during over a half-century." Additional passages describe forced property loss "at a mere trifle of their cost" and emphasize instability within the camps, stating that "residents feel insecure and apprehensive towards the many changes and modifications of WRA policies." The report also records the exclusion of Buddhist clergy and the disruption of community institutions. Interior front cover bears institutional marking from the United States Army Language School at the Presidio of Monterey, linking the document to military language training and intelligence contexts during and immediately after the war. Quarto format measuring approximately 8.5 x 11 inches, complete in 123 pages. Published at the conclusion of the War Relocation Authority's operations, this report captures the transition from wartime incarceration to postwar dispersal and reveals how federal agencies framed both the causes and consequences of Japanese American displacement. Its language provides contemporaneous acknowledgment of economic loss and psychological harm while remaining embedded within administrative reporting structures, making it a critical source for analyzing how the federal government documented its own policies. The association with the United States Army Language School further situates the document within military and intelligence networks that relied on Japanese language expertise during the war, underscoring the paradox of incarceration alongside strategic utilization of Japanese American labor and knowledge. Moderate edge wear to covers with scattered staining and minor corner loss, spine reinforced with cloth tape, and light age toning to pages; overall condition good.…

Add to basketPamphlet. Condition: Near fine. A very scarce example of the War Relocation Authority's efforts to find opportunities for interned Japanese Americans in New England. The pejorative headline suggests that the Boston field office of the WRA may not have fully supported the effort. This pamphlet is dated December 31, 1944. The Western Defense Command, the Army unit that issued the order to remove people of Japanese descent from the Pacific Coast, rescinded the order in December 1944, with effect on January 2, 1945. This publication is likely connected to the official end of the Japanese internment. As a practical matter, before the surrender of Japan it was difficult for internees to obtain permission to return to California, Oregon, and Washington. With relatively few people being cleared to return home, the WRA made an effort to find jobs for interned Japanese in other parts of the United States. The WRA operated small offices around the country. The Boston office, perhaps ordered to expand its outreach to potential employers and non-profit groups willing to help resettle Japanese and Japanese Americans, did the bare minimum with this publication. The content consists entirely of reprinted newspaper articles about Japanese Americans, mostly collected from midwestern cities. The stories selected include articles about Nisei soldiers and WACs, babies, and Nisei men and women doing all-American things like decorating Christmas trees and ice skating. Notably absent is any text about what someone amenable to assisting the interned Japanese might do to help. 24 leaves, printed rectos (front side) only. Publication no. 48 / C-2015. Not located in OCLC; in fact, no WRA publications from Boston are recorded. The date and location are printed in the upper left corner of the front cover. SOURCE: The same bookseller from whom I acquired the other Japanese American pamphlets in my list 114. A near fine copy, stapled in the upper left corner, as issued. Complete, with page 24 labeled "final" in the lower margin. With an ink stamp from the Hartford, CT, WRA office on the front cover, and a chop mark (??, the surname Doi) on the verso of the last page.…
