First edition. 1877. 147pp. Hardback, in Good/Fair condition for its 150 years of use (covers are in reddy brown, with gilded and embossed titling and image on the front and spine, and an embossed design on the back cover ; gilded top, bottom and fore edges ; black end papers, with a slight tear at the top of one page. Overall, graded Fair, rather than Good, because : it is worn along the edges and corners ; has small creamy marks on parts of the the back cover ; is lightly tanned ; and has small, light foxing spots on many pages. It is, though, complete. There is a faded inscription titled 'A Christmas Gift' on the front end paper, dated Dec 24th 1877 ; it has tissue paper covering the title page ; and there are many superb b/w engravings (uncredited) illustrating the text A very rare find, and a fascinating account of an American black slave's life, the Rev. Josiah Henson, who toured Britain giving public talks about his life, including to Queen Victoria at Windsor Castle, and was the prototype for Harriet Beecher Stowe's best seller 'Uncle Tom's Cabin'. This edition is subtitled 'Young People's Illustrated Edition', and is edited by John Lobb, with a preface by the Earl of Shaftesbury. Published just a dozen years after the American Civil War and Emancipation, and an influential best seller at the time.
