Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Copeland, Charles (illustrator). Volume one in the author's Stories of the Triangular League series. Bound in dark blue cloth with titles stamped in gilt and decorations stamped in black, white and tan. With six illustrations on coated paper, all present. The publisher's logo on the spine is the early variety , with the firm's initials in cursive. There is no author's box in this title. Ads at the rear list seven titles in the Phillips Exeter series, plus ten more pages of books by various authors, none of them originally published after 1908. The cloth shows general light edgewea with the corner tips just through. A clean, tight, unmarked copy. Mattson & Davis 59500, format 1. PLEASE NOTE: Buyers should understand that the publisher's slug on the copyright page is useless in determining first edition status on any of this publisher's books issued after the merger of D. Lothrop with Lee & Shepard in June 1905. While the slug, which reads "Published/month/year" was likely originally designed to show first edition status, the fact is that it was never removed from any of this publisher's reprints for at least 15 years, during which time not only books by this author but many others were reprinted with the slug intact, thus causing confusion ever since. We have more than 85 books by this publisher issued during the period from 1905 to 1925, and all of them carry this slug. Perhaps the easiet way to check this information lies in Edward Stratemeyer's Dave Porter series, which was completed in 1919, all books being issued in a cream cloth with gilt titles. Reprints then followed, both in green and orange cloth; in every instance, with every title listed at the rear, these reprints carry the slug, even those originally issued as early as 1905. Books that remain collectible today include authors such as Everett Tomlinson, Warren Eldred, Edna Brown, Edward Stratemeyer and Francis Rolt-Wheeler. Also take note of the fact that this publisher's heel logo, which first appeared in 1905 as a cursive version of L, L&S Co., was changed to the publisher's complete name in block lettering in 1910. Thus any printing with block lettering of a title that appeared before 1910 is a reprint. We will be happy to confirm any information contained in this note; just email us.
