Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Inspiration propels us. Its the basis of every accomplishment. But the idea that it simply falls into your lap is a myth. Inspiration doesnt come to us in a gust of wind, only to disappear into the mist again. You make it happen; its a reward for work that youve already done. The combination… of perspiration and inspiration takes you to where you want to go.In this ode to what is perhaps the brains greatest achievement, Ap Dijksterhuis explains, with a storytellers verve, what inspiration is, why we have it, how it works and how to get it. Drawing upon on the most up-to-date research in neuroscience and psychology, he shows how inspiration stands in relation to creativity, motivation, curiosity and the overall functioning of the brain.Ultimately, inspiration is not a privilege granted to a talented few: everyone who chooses inspiration will benefit from it. Including you. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Contact seller5-star sellerSoft cover. Condition: Fair. First Oxford University Press paperback edition of E. J. Dijksterhuis's landmark history of the development of the mechanistic conception of nature. Translated from the Dutch by C. Dikshoorn, the work was first published in English by the Clarendon Press in 1961; this Oxford Galaxy Books paperback wa…s issued in 1969. The volume contains x, 537 pages, including bibliography and index. Dijksterhuis traces the evolution of physical science and its underlying philosophical ideas from the Pythagoreans, Plato, Aristotle, and ancient astronomy through medieval scholastic thought, Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, Descartes, Huygens, Boyle, and Newton. Particular attention is given to the gradual replacement of the Aristotelian worldview by the mathematical and mechanical understanding of nature that came to dominate seventeenth-century science. The book remains a major scholarly study of the relationship between mathematics, physics, astronomy, philosophy, and the Scientific Revolution. Condition: Fair. Original illustrated black wrappers show substantial wear, including heavy rubbing and scratching, creasing, edge chipping, worn and softened corners, and several short tears and abrasions along the margins. The lower portion of the front cover has a pronounced diagonal crease, while the upper-right corner is creased and chipped. Spine is rubbed and creased, with scattered surface loss and wear at the head and foot. Rear cover is rubbed, soiled, and edge-worn. Page edges are toned and somewhat uneven from use. A penciled "2.95" appears at the upper-right corner of the title page, matching the printed cover price. The photographed interior pages remain legible and securely held; no additional writing is visible in the supplied photographs. A heavily worn but complete and serviceable scholarly reading copy. Originally published in Dutch in 1950 as De Mechanisering van het Wereldbeeld, this influential work helped establish Dijksterhuis as one of the leading twentieth-century historians of mathematics and physical science. The 1969 Oxford paperback is the first paperback issue of the English translation and remains sought after by readers interested in the Scientific Revolution, Newtonian science, ancient and medieval physics, and the philosophy and history of science. Carefully packed and shipped in a box. Shipped via USPS with tracking provided. International shipping available. Additional photographs available upon request. Please review photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. Returns accepted within the AbeBooks 30-day return window. SCI 2a.
