Voor zijn hoofdwerk De mechanisering van het wereldbeeld ontving hij in 1952 de P.C. Hooftprijs. Dat deze hoogste literaire onderscheiding werd uitgereikt voor een boek over de geschiedenis. van de natuurwetenschappen, stemde Dijksterhuis tot grote tevredenheid. Zijn wetenschapshistorische werk heeft hij immers altijd gezien als een bijdrage tot het overbruggen van de kloof tussen de literaire en de natuurwetenschappelijke wereld. De wetenschapsgeschiedenis, die door historici en beoefenaren van de natuurwetenschap altijd stiefmoederlijk behandeld was, was daartoe volgens Dijksterhuis het middel bij uitstek; hier konden de vertegenwoordigers van de literaire cultuur zien hoe de natuurwetenschap zich als een element van de cultuur als geheel had ontwikkeld; de natuurwetenschappers konden zien hoe ook hun specialismen niet in een vacu?m waren ontstaan.
