Using data from a number of Ibero-American nations, the study combines environmental, socio-economic and geographic factors to construct a set of spatial and technical indicators that measure the social vulnerability and industrial hazardousness of a defined area. Aggregating these indicators in a geographic information system (GIS) allows researchers to assess the potential risk to which a certain area and its population are subject as a result of the environmental deterioration caused by co-located industrial activity.…

Environmental, socio-economic and geographical concepts are combined to construct a set of spatial and technical indicators that assess the Social Vulnerability and Industrial Hazardousness of a given territory. Aggregating the indicators in a geographic information system has allowed us to assess the potential risk to which a certain area and its population is subject due to the environmental deterioration caused by the industrial activities located there. Two scales of analysis have been used to make the assessment: a regional one that identifies average risk over large administrative areas such as provinces, and a more detailed scale that we name census unit , to determine the local distribution of risk and contaminant industries. The methodology applied allows us to identify geographical variations in the levels of risk evaluated within the same country and also to compare different countries in Iberoamerica.…

Neither poverty reduction nor sustainability will ultimately be achieved. What is more urgently needed instead, as argued in this book, is collaboration for sustainability and innovation in the global South, especially building on models originally developed in the South that are transferable to the North. The book contributes in a meaningfully to the discussion of how innovation and sustainability science can benefit both sides in South-North innovation collaborations. It provides useful introduction to the topics, as well as valuable critiques and best practices.
