Josep…h-Bernard de Chabert de Cogolin followed family tradition when he entered the navy as a midshipman in July 1741. After several voyages in the Mediterranean, where he displayed an interest in science and a talent for drawing charts that brought him to the attention of the minister of Marine, he was appointed sub-section leader of midshipmen and posted to Brest. In 1746 he made two voyages to reconnoiter the coasts of Acadia and correct the defectiveness of French charts. While in the frigate Castor he drew a chart of the roads and harbor of the Baie de Chibouctou (Halifax harbor), and later the same year he was sent in the Sirène to reconnoiter the harbor at Annapolis Royal and spy out the British ships anchored there. The next spring he joined Jacques-Pierre de Taffanel de La Jonquière's squadron in the Gloire and was taken prisoner by the British during the battle off Cape Ortegal, Spain. After repatriation Chabert was promoted ensign in April 1748 and retained in Paris by the minister, who wanted him to learn astronomy in order to instruct naval officers. Two years later he was chosen to go to Île Royale (Cape Breton Island) and continue his survey of the shores of Acadia. His expedition was organized by Roland-Michel Barrin* de La Galissonière, then head of the Dépôt des Cartes et Plans de la Marine in Paris. Chabert reached Louisbourg in August 1750 and immediately began to make a long series of observations about the waters of Île Royale. Although the weather was continually bad, he entered what is now the Strait of Canso, obtained a longitude from the shore, and twice observed the astronomical latitude. He also recorded tides and compass variations and charted the strait. At Canso itself he carried out similar observations and drew a second chart before returning to Louisbourg. He then surveyed the coast of Île Royale from Guyon Island, southwest of Cape Gabarus, northward beyond Scatarie Island. During the winter he had a but constructed on the ramparts at Louisbourg and despite the rigours of the climate successfully established the longitude of the town before spring. In June 1751 he departed for Cape Sable at the southern extremity of Nova Scotia to determine its latitude and longitude and then coasted along the shore. At the conclusion of his survey he discovered the length of Nova Scotia to be about 15 to 20 leagues shorter than was shown on contemporary charts. The following month he successfully located Sable Island, and in August he charted the southern coast of Newfoundland from Cape Ray to Cape Race. Returning to France in November, Chabert was attached to the Dépôt de la Marine under La Galissonière's direction and prepared his surveys for publication. The result appeared in 1753 as Voyage fait par ordre du roi en 1750 et 1751, dans l'Amérique septentrionale. The work is in two parts: the first is an abridgement of his journal accompanied by charts; the second is devoted to his astronomical observations. It contained the most accurate hydrographic survey of the east coast that had yet been made, and the ministry of Marine subsidized publication by taking 200 copies for its own use. In 1754 Chabert was made a knight of the order of Saint-Louis as a reward for his services and two years later he was promoted lieutenant. Condition: S2 slightly stained at lower margin, slightly foxed and toned, 3 small wormholes at tale of spine, slight separation of front head hinge, corners bumped else a very nice copy.

Ses travaux corrigent notamment de façon décisive la représentation de la Nouvelle-Écosse, dont il établit que la longueur avait été surestimée de quinze à vingt lieues sur les cartes antérieures. Jacques Cassini is most famous for extending the Paris meridian, a meridian line running through the Paris Observatory in Paris?now longitude 2°20?14.02500? East. It was a long-standing rival to the Greenwich meridian as the prime meridian of the world.Admitted at the age of seventeen to membership of the French Academy of Sciences, in 1696 Cassini was elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London (the UK?s national academy of sciences). In 1718, Cassini extended the Paris meridian, measuring the arc of the meridian from Dunkirk to Perpignan, succeeding in this feat some 130 years before George Airy calculated the Greenwich meridian in 1851. Cassini presented this work in the Histoire de l?Academie des Sciences, and in 1722 he published his results in the important work De la Grandeur et de la Figure de la Terre included in the present volume, ?in which he confirmed his support for the hypothesis of the elongation of the terrestrial ellipsoid and opposed that of its flattening, which was defended by the supporters of Newton and Huygens" (DSB). It is divided into two parts: the first contains the author's account of his journey from Brest to Louisbourg and of his four expeditions on the nearby islands and coasts, and the second, the astronomical observations he made at sea, which are renowned for their accuracy. "Chabert (Joseph-Bernard, marquis de), squadron leader and hydrographer, born in Toulon on February 28, 1724, entered the navy at a very young age, where he earned dual distinction both through his brave service in battle and through his dedication to hydraulic and geographic work which, in securing him a place among scholars, proved highly useful to navigators sailing in the regions of North America. Chabert took part in most of the battles fought by the French navy against the English in both hemispheres during the early years of the reign of Louis XVI. He was the one who determined the placement of the Acadian coasts on the map of the province of Canada, and he recorded the results of his work." "Our route was hindered by the wind which shifted to the northeast on the morning of the 3rd & was followed by calm, which forced us to finish by taking a bearing at a distance of two to three leagues from the southern point of Miquelon Island, the largest of the Saint Pierre islands. From this I deduced the position of that point as east-southeast 3 degrees three-quarters east at a distance of 42 and a half leagues from Cape Ray. Miquelon Island is about five leagues in length north to south and a league and a half in width, and Saint Pierre Island to its south is two leagues in length in the same direction. On the 4th we passed between these two islands, separated by a gap of three-quarters of a league, in the middle of which one finds 50 fathoms and everywhere enough depth for the largest vessels. We passed to port the low-lying Green Island and to starboard a small but very high and almost sheer-sided island called Colombier; it lies very close to the northeast point of Saint Pierre Island and serves as a landmark when approaching from the southeast. One finds 50 fathoms at a cable's length from it. We then came before the entrance of the port on the east side of Saint Pierre Island; several small islands shelter the anchorage from the open sea on the southeast. It appeared to me good and suitable for all kinds of vessels. A plan of it is found in the 4th book of The English Pilot, printed in London in 1732, which I have already cited on page 39. We were two cables from land before the entrance of this port and Colombier Island was to our northwest by west by compass, with about 50 fathoms of depth at that spot, when at two in the afternoon a light breeze rose from the west-southwest. We made course from that point toward Cape Sainte Marie, before which we arrived the next day, and its position was determined to be twenty-four leagues east one degree south from the entrance to the port of Saint Pierre Island. One notices on the coast, ten leagues east by north-east from that same port, a high and very recognizable mountain called Chapeau Rouge, before which the compass variation was again observed as 16 degrees northwest. This mountain and Cape Sainte Marie, which lie 14 leagues apart, form the mouth of Placentia Bay. The port of the same name is about 12 leagues north of Cape Sainte Marie; its description and a plan of it can be found.
