Se ha escrito mucho a lo largo de los años sobre el estrés y el burnout de los profesores, pero existe poca investigación que reporte las condiciones esenciales para que los profesores sostengan su vocación y su eficacia a lo largo de su vida profesional, en contextos difíciles y de cambio. Basándose en una amplísima gama de investigaciones educativas, psicológicas, socioculturales y de la neurociencia, junto a expresivos relatos de los propios profesores en escuelas primarias y secundarias de ámbito internacional, y partiendo también de su propia investigación sobre la identidad de los educadores, los autores concluyen que la resiliencia en los docentes puede ser alimentada por los entornos intelectuales, sociales y organizacionales en los que viven y trabajan, en vez de ser simplemente un atributo personal o un rasgo determinado por la naturaleza o por la experiencia pasada.
