Wrappers. Condition: Very Good. Mammoth Run Publishing, Published 2019. Wraps, 304 pp.; 28 cm; illustrated with black-and-white photographs, stratigraphic figures, plates, and artifact drawings. Cream pictorial paper covers depicting an excavation trench and lanceolate projectile points. In Very Good condition. Light bumping and creasing to the edges and corners and mild shelf wear to the covers. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. The first publication of E. Mott Davis's 1954 Harvard doctoral dissertation, a foundational synthesis of the prehistory of the Central Great Plains before the appearance of pottery, edited and compiled by Ruthann Knudson and Don G. Wyckoff and issued sixty-five years after it was written. Davis (1918-1998), later a leading figure in Plains archaeology, drew on the Medicine Creek Project excavations of late-glacial and early Holocene hunter-gatherer sites in southwestern Nebraska, principally the Red Smoke, Lime Creek, and Allen sites, to reconstruct the cultural sequence of the region from the earliest evidence of human activity to the introduction of pottery. As the editors explain in their tribute, the unpublished typescript circulated only at Harvard for decades; they tracked it down, scanned the original photographs and maps, and formatted it for publication to honor Davis after his death. The volume includes his previously unpublished Medicine Creek Project annual reports for 1948, 1950, 1951, 1952, and 1953 as appendices, providing primary field data on Paleoindian sites that have figured prominently in research on early Plains hunter-gatherer adaptations and lithic technology. An important scholarly contribution, reviewed in Plains Anthropologist.Contents: Foreword; Introduction; Natural Environment; The Bison and Its Exploitation; The Medicine Creek Reservoir Area; The Red Smoke Site; The Lime Creek Site; The Allen Site; Geological Evidence Pertinent to the Study of Early Man on the Central Plains; Chronology, Complexes, Types, and Attributes; Sites of Early Hunting Peoples in the Central Plains; Summary and Conclusions; Bibliography; Appendices A-I (Red Smoke excavations and Medicine Creek Reservoir field reports, 1948-1953).
