Zwischen den Alpen und Neapel verbinden Autobahnen hochkomplexe topographische Gegebenheiten mit urbanen Ballungsräumen. Sie folgen dabei antiken Handelswegen oder den Straßen der Grand Tour der Romantiker des 19. Jahrhunderts, die auf der Suche nach arkadischen, erhabenen Landschaften waren, wie sie von de Loutherbourg, Claude und Turner gemalt worden waren. Die Erfahrung des Erhabenen in unberührter Natur war einer der Höhepunkte der Grand Tour. Heute rasen wir auf Autobahnen, über Brücken und Auffahrten, durch Galerien und Tunnel die mühsame, mehrtägige Reise früherer Zeiten schrumpft auf wenige Stunden. Diese Reiseform zeitigt eine neue Form des Sublimen, die der gleichförmigen sich vor dem Auge des Fahrers entfaltenden betonierten Struktur der Autobahn in der Landschaft. Sue Barr (Professorin für Fotografie, Architectural Association, London) ist eine von brutalistischer Architektur und Beton besessene Fotografin. Mit Ihrer Großformatkamera folgte Sie von den Alpen bis nach Neapel und fotografierte die bislang zumeist ignorierte Architektur der Autobahn. Searching for the sublime in motorway architecture between the Alps and Naples Motorways are architectural megastructures in the landscape, crossing nations, natural or political borders making previously remote places accessible to development, tourism and trade. Between the Alps and Naples motorways connect highly complex topographies and urban conditions, often retracing antique trade paths and routes taken by northern Romantics on the Grand Tour, searching for arcadian and sublime landscapes as painted by de Loutherbourg, Claude and Turner. The experience of the sublime in untamed nature became a highlight on the Grand Tour. Landscapes that once took days to cross, today we speed through via motorways over concrete bridges, ramps, through galleries and tunnels. But with this speed comes a new accelerated and simultaneously calm sublime of concrete motorway megastructures. Sue Barr (Head of Photography, Architectural Association, London) is a photographer obsessed by concrete and Brutalist architecture.
