In 1895 - 1897, the Hon. David Wynford Carnegie, born in 1981, youngest son of the Earl of Southesk, led one of the last great expeditions in the e…xploration of Australia. His route from Lake Darlot to Halls Creek and return, took thirteen months and covered over three thousand mile. Carnegie financed his expedition from the result of a successful gold strike at Lake Darlot. Arriving in Australia in 1972, with his friend, Lord Percy Douglas, he learnt the ways of the bush as a miner, prospector and engine driver, taking several small expeditions into the unknown area in search of gold. Book weight is 0.340kg.

The contents remain clean and crisp throughout. A nicely produced facsimile of Carnegie's account of his 1896-97 expedition exploring the interior deserts of Western Australia, during which he covered some 3,000 miles, leading a party of five men (including an Aboriginal guide, Warri) and nine camels from Coolgardie across the Gibson Desert and Great Sandy Desert to Hall's Creek in the East Kimberley and back again. The present edition reproduces the 1898 first edition published in London by C. Arthur Pearson.
