Softcover. Condition: Very Good. Immediate dispatch from Somerset. Nice older book in good condition. Pages in good condition. No notes or highlighting. See images. Fantastic book. About the book >.>.> Since the pioneer publication in 1892 of the archaeological catalogue of the National Museum of Antiquities of Scotland (anon. 1…892), museum archaeologists have been inspired to produce similarly useful catalogues illustrating their collections. Among the better known early publications are the catalogues of Devizes Museum (Cunnington & Goddard 1896, and Cunnington & Goddard 1934), Sheffield Museum (Howarth 1899), and the antiquities guides relating to the Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age and Anglo-Saxon collections of the British Museum published between 1904 and 1926. Note should also be made of the modest and unillustrated catalogue published by Dr. Ernest Wilkins, the Honorary Curator of the Isle of Wight Museum, in 1852. A further catalogue which undoubtedly ranks as a tour de force is that compiled for Carisbrooke Castle Museum by Gerald Ambrose Sherwin, F.S.A. Sherwin's unpublished manuscript, modestly entitled his 'Notes', was bequeathed to the Society of Antiquaries of London in 1943. A typed versio.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. With the thought of treasure, Isle of Wight islander, Derek Williams researched ancient local wreck records. Top of his extensive wreck list was the 40-gun frigate Assurance lost in 1753 while returning from Jamaica with Governor Trelawny on board, whose story possibly inspired Robert Louis…Stevenson to write Treasure Island. Dereks first dive at the western point of the Isle of Wight called The Needles put him on top of cannons, various wreckage and Spanish-American Pieces of Eight, all scattered at the foot of the rock face. He reported this astonishing discovery to the authorities which resulted in the site being designated the 6th British historic protected wreck site. When the authorities decided that further professional help was needed, author and diver John Bingeman supplied his Portsmouth Royal Naval diving team, and together with David Tomalin, County Archaeologist, developed the full potential of this important site. Over the next nine years John Bingemans team conducted annual visits to excavate the site; they successfully recovered 3,471 artefacts including cannon weighing 1 tons. Some of these cannon post-dated the Assurance, leading to the identification of a second 38-gun frigate, the Pomone, lost in 1811. Her Captain, Robert Barries extensive correspondence was discovered by Paul Simpson to have been archived by Duke University, North Carolina. It features Pomones continuous actions during the French Napoleonic wars, followed by his appointment to the 74-gun Dragon when he saw action in Chesapeake Bay during the 1812-15 war with the USA. Returning to North America as Senior Naval Officer Canada, Commodore Barrie made quite a name for himself improving the political relationship between the USA and Canada; he is remembered by the Canadian City named Barrie. Previously un-researched archaeological finds are featured, including the development of rigging blocks, gunlocks, military buttons and ships chain pumps, all superbly illustrated, as well as the results of research into numerous other artefacts of the period. Appendices contain the transcripts of the two ships court martials and make fascinating reading. Captains seem to be blameless while their navigating officers are held responsible even going to prison. Perhaps not surprising when tried by fellow Captains! The intriguing story of the rediscovery and investigation of two naval wrecks. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Isle of Wight County Archaeological Unit carried out an intertidal survey over 6km of downwarped coastline on the southern shore of the eastern Solent. The focal point was Wootton Creek, a drowned river valley which has provided a haven for human activity since at least Mesolithic times. The… intertidal study revealed some 180 sites and structures amongst which the Neolithic, Bronze Age, Roman, Saxon and medieval periods were particularly well represented. Outstanding features were the wooden trackways, post alignments and fish-traps of Neolithic and later date. Trees entombed in Neolithic peat produced one of the most rewarding dendrochronologies currently obtained in southern England whilst the incidence of flint picks and lithic scatters was also notable.
