Soft cover. Condition: New. This volume was assembled as a dedication to the career achievements of R. Gordon Gastil. The papers focus primarily on the Mesozoic and Tertiary tectonic evolution of Baja California and nearby regions of mainland México and southern California. The volume begins with an extensive tectonic overview w…ith the goals pf summarizing our present understanding of the geology of Baja California, addressing several controversial issues and providing a framework for more detailed discussions in some of the remaining papers. The volume contains a wealth of modern analytical data and authoritatively explores regional issues. The accompanying CD-ROM contains valuable geochronological and geochemical data, color images, and out-of-print Geological Society of America maps. In particular, the CD-ROM contains the highly sought after geologic maps of northern Baja California published by Gordon Gastil and colleagues in 1975 as part of the Geological Society of America Memoir 140, Reconnaissance Geology of the State of Baja California.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - claim was that he had faced a conflict of duties pitting his legal duty not to kill against his duty as a physician to relieve his patient's unbearable suffering. He was acquitted on the important grounds of conflict of duty. These grounds are base…d on a concept in Dutch law called 'force majeure' 4 which recognizes extenuating circumstances such as conflicts of duty. The acquittal was upheld by the Lower Court of Alkmaar, but revoked by an Amsterdam court of appeal. The case went on to the Supreme Court, but before the Supreme Court's decision was issued, the Royal Dutch Medical Association (RDMA) attempted to clarify the criteria for euthanasia that many within the profession already accepted. The RDMA proposed that physicians be permitted to perform euthanasia provided that a set of procedures had been met. Variously stated, the guidelines contain the following central provisions: Voluntary, competent, explicit, and persistent requests on the part of the - patient; Requests based on full information; - The patient is in a situation of intolerable and hopeless suffering (either - physical or mental); No further acceptable alternatives to euthanasia. All alternatives - acceptable to the patient for relief of suffering having been tried; Consultation with at least one other physician whose judgment can be - 5 expected to be independent. Indirectly, these guidelines became the criteria prosecutors used to decide whether or not to bring charges.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. In Taking Up Serpents: A History of Snake Handling Kimbrough explains the history and practice of serpent-handling believers from the perspective of a respectful and scholarly participant-observer. While this is a story of Kimbrough's experiences with the Saylor family of eastern Kentucky, K…imbrough explains the origins of serpent handling as they emerged in the teachings of George Hensley of the Grasshopper community near Cleveland, Tennessee.Churches that practice snake handling have dotted the Appalachian mountains for over 100 years, but not until now has their story been so consistently and faithfully written by an author who is both a participant-observer and a Ph.D. historian. Having an Appalachian background himself, David Kimbrough studied, observed, participated with, and befriended many individuals in this unique expression of faith: the handling of snakes. This activity is understood not as a test of God's care and protection, but in fulfillment of the command of Jesus himself, that if done in his name then no harm would come to them. The exception to this is if the person is not right with God, then injury and/or death could follow. It was a test of the person's faith.Believing wholeheartedly that such an act was not only appropriate but commanded, churches practicing the handling of snakes and the drinking of poisons have often been labeled as cultic in nature, but, according to Kimbrough, nothing could be further from the truth. These are people who truly believe in taking the words of the New Testament seriously. This wonderfully-researched and engrossing book is the most complete account of the people and the churches that practice the handling of snakes intheir worship of God.
