Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a comprehensive analysis of public health measures, particularly those related to sanitation, for the rural poor in the mid-19th century. The author, a medical doctor, argues that despite significant advances in urban sanitation and healthcare, the rural poor were largely neglected, leading to widespread suffering and poverty. The book examines the historical context of public health and welfare provision, highlighting the role of religious institutions and the aristocracy in providing limited support in the past. It also discusses the economic and social factors that contributed to the poor health of rural communities, including inadequate nutrition, lack of access to clean water, and poor housing conditions. The author proposes a comprehensive system of public health measures to address these issues, including the establishment of rural health districts, the provision of free medical care for the poor, and the promotion of public health education. This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the history of public health, the plight of the rural poor, and the role of government in addressing health disparities This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Soft cover. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. Boston. 1830. Pamphlet, 24 pages with blue paper cover, no back cover (absent on other copies as well). Textually complete with cover page, frontis, title page and full text. Now contained in custom quarter leather archival box with marbled paper boards and illustrations from the pamphlet on the front and back. The pamphlet has not had conservation of any kind. The edges are tattered, prior owner's occasional pencil notes, stains present on most pages but none prevent legibility. Please see images of the book you will receive. Feel free to inquire. Notes: This was a fairly famous case with Daniel Webster prosecuting one of the accused. The subject of the pamphlet is Richard Crowninshield. For more info on the pamphlet and the trial see McDade (Annals of Murder) 564. There is an 1845 reprint with slightly different title. More Notes: This is a rare item. Last seen at auction 1996, and 1976 before that. None listed for sale. Search of WorldCat locates ~10-12 physical copies. See OCLC: 38598916. This is the second copy I have handled. The prior one did not have a blue back cover either. In fact when searching old descriptions several mention the absence of the back cover, so this may be complete as issued. [Lurid Literature].
