Het luxueuze Palacehotel dat tussen 1911 en 1912 aan de noordboulevard van Noordwijk aan Zee verrees, was het fraaiste hotel dat ooit in de badplaats werd gebouwd. Een felle brand in de winter van 1978 verwoestte het hotel. Pas drie jaar later zou het inmiddels ruïneuze hotel worden gesloopt. In 1983 werd het terrein bestraat, en dit min of meer per ongeluk ontstane plein werd in korte tijd hét evenementenplein van Noordwijk. Net als het Palacehotel werd ook het Gat van Palace een begrip. In 2013 maakt dit plein dertig jaar deel uit van Noordwijk aan Zee. Dit jubileum vormde de aanleiding voor bouwhistoricus Michel van Dam om de geschiedenis van het Palacehotel uit te zoeken, en het dubbele gezicht van het Gat van Palace te beschrijven. Want buiten de evenementen werden sinds 1983 ook diverse bouwplannen voor het terrein gepresenteerd. Deze strandden soms met een grote knal, soms stilletjes, maar nooit geruisloos.
