El propósito de esta obra es analizar y definir el papel que en este contexto juega el bibliotecario en los centros de enseñanza superior y cómo es percibido por los docentes. En primer lugar, se expone la situación actual de la enseñanza superior en Europa, haciendo especial hincapié en la financiación, la evaluación y la calidad como ejes principales. Se analiza luego la función de las bibliotecas universitarias en el contexto de la educación superior para conocer qué acciones se pueden desarrollar en el nuevo marco de actuación. A continuación, se analizan en profundidad las funciones que, hasta ahora, ha realizado el bibliotecario y cómo han de conjugarse con los nuevos papeles que debe desempeñar, los cuales, lejos de relegarlo a un segundo plano, le ofrecen la oportunidad de desempeñar un rol fundamental en la adquisición de conocimientos y competencias que faciliten el acceso y buen uso de la información. Finalmente, se aborda un problema trascendental, como es la interacción entre el profesor y el bibliotecario, con la intención de conocer qué deben hacer juntos para lograr el éxito. Maria João Amante es licenciada en historia (Universidad de Lisboa), posgraduada en ciencias documentales (Universidad de Lisboa), con máster en gestión de la información (Universidad de Sheffield) y doctora en documentación (Universidad de Alcalá). Trabaja en el Instituto Universitario de Lisboa como directora de los Servicios de Información y Documentación. Es profesora colaboradora del máster en Ciencias Documentales de la Universidade Lusófona de Humanidades e Tecnologías y del posgrado en Ciencias de la Información y Documentación del Laureate International Universities. Es autora y coautora de artículos en revistas especializadas y de varios capítulos de libros. Ha participado como ponente en distintos congresos nacionales e internacionales sobre bibliotecas universitarias, alfabetización informacional, gestión de la información, repositorios digitales y sociedad del conocimiento. Ana Isabel Extremeño Placer, doctora en ciencias políticas (Universidad Complutense de Madrid), ha trabajado como documentalista especializada en el Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas y en el Ministerio de Asuntos Sociales y como profesora asociada en la Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
