Press paperback edition of Vannoccio Biringuccio's foundational Renaissance treatise on mining, metallurgy, foundry work, metal casting, assaying, ore reduction, alloys, glassmaking, gunpowder, and related technological arts. Translated from the Italian with an extensive introduction and… notes by Cyril Stanley Smith and Martha Teach Gnudi. The volume comprises 508 pages and reproduces the historic illustrations and woodcuts associated with the work. First published in Venice in 1540, Pirotechnia is regarded as the earliest printed work to cover the field of metallurgy comprehensively. Written by a practicing metallurgist and foundryman, it records techniques that had previously been passed primarily through craft traditions and helped establish a written literature joining practical workmanship with experimental science. Condition: Good. Original illustrated red wrappers show substantial wear. Front cover has a pronounced vertical crease extending nearly its full height, additional diagonal creasing and cracking at the lower-right corner, rubbing and abrasions along the edges, and general handling wear. Rear cover is rubbed, toned, and somewhat soiled, with edge and corner wear. Spine is rubbed with wear and lifting or curling at the head. Page edges are age-toned. The photographed interior pages remain clean and legible. An embossed private-library stamp reading "LIBRARY OF / RJM / ROBERT MIZE" appears prominently on the front cover and on an interior leaf. No institutional library markings are visible in the supplied photographs. A worn but serviceable reading and reference copy. The ownership stamp may possibly relate to Robert J. Mize, an individual documented in the 1930s Alaska mining industry as a millman and assayer, although that association has not been conclusively established and is not offered as confirmed provenance.
