Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. Edmund Bonner, the vehemently anti-Protestant Bishop of London, is the focus of this volume penned by a self-proclaimed Tractarian British Critic. The author's goal is not to prove Bonner a saint, but rather to demonstrate the logic of Bonner's religious beliefs and the methods he used in a failed effort to stem the tide of Protestantism that swept England in the 16th century. The author succeeds in painting a complex portrait of Bonner as a learned, faithful servant to both the Catholic Church and to the Tudor monarchy, defending the authority and practices of the former against what he saw as the heretical innovations of the latter. The author draws numerous parallels between the challenges faced by the Catholic Church in the mid-16th century with the perceived threats to the Church of England in the present day. This book will be of interest to anyone studying the English Reformation, the life of Edmund Bonner, or the Tractarian movement within the contemporary Church of England. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
