Da in diese dort zwei Flüßchen einmünden, die Geisel und die Klia, war der Platz im Mittelalter leicht zu befestigen und zu verteidigen. Er wurde deshalb immer wieder besiedelt. Die schriftliche Kunde davon geht bis in die Karolingerzeit zurück. Überregionale Bedeutung erhielt der Ort im 10./11. Jahrhundert, nachdem ihn Heinrich I., der 919-936 als erster deutscher König regierte, durch Heirat an sich gebracht hatte. Heinrich I. ließ in Merseburg eine Pfalz erbauen, und daneben stiftete er eine Kirche, deren Weihe 931 gefeiert wurde. Sein Sohn und Nachfolger, Otto der Große (936-973), tat dann am 10. August 955, unmittelbar vor der alles entscheidenden Lechfeldschlacht gegen die Ungarn, ?unter Tränen das Gelübde: Wenn Christus ihm an diesem Tage. in Gnaden Sieg und Leben gäbe, wolle er in der Burg Merseburg. ein Bistum errichten und. seine große, jüngst begonnene Pfalz für die Kirche ausbauen lassen" (Thietmar II, 10). Die Bistumsstiftung kam dann erst 968 zustande. Aber schon 981 wurde das Bistum Merseburg wieder aufgehoben. Nach der Wiedergründung durch König Heinrich II. (1002-1024) im Jahre 1004 legte Bischof Thietmar von Merseburg, der bekannte, eben zitierte Chronist am 18. Mai gutes Exemplar, ordentlich * Verlag: Regensburg : Schnell und Steiner * Bindung: Heft.
