In diesem Buch wird die These verteidigt, daß die allgemeine Kritik, die Heidegger an der abendländischen Metaphysik (als einer Tradition, die von einem geschlossen…en Substanzdenken getragen wird) ausübt, nicht auf Hegels "Phänomenologie des Geistes" angewendet werden kann. Aufgrund eines systematischen Vergleichs zwischen dem methodischen Aufbau von "Sein und Zeit" und der "Phänomenologie des Geistes" wird die Schlußfolgerung gezogen, daß Heidegger sein Denken zu unrecht profiliert als ein Endlichkeitsdenken, das dem Unendlichkeitsdenken Hegels gegenübersteht. Hegel ist kein Substanzdenker in Heideggerischem Sinn. In der Phänomenologie des Geistes können Äquivalente für das gestimmte Selbst, das Denken über die Gesellschaft als geworfener Entwurf und für die ontologische Differenz gefunden werden. Der Vergleich zwischen der hermeneutischen und der dialektischen Phänomenologie macht klar, daß Hegel Probleme thematisiert, die bei Heidegger unreflektiert bleiben. In The Nature of the Self the thesis is elaborated that, in the contemporary discussion, a central dimension of recognition is lacking. All forms of moral and legal recognition presuppose the recognition at a more fundamental level: the recognition of the body by the mind. The systematic development of this relation can be performed with the help of a critical reconstruction of Hegel 's project in the Phenomenology of Spirit and the Philosophy of Right.This reconstruction results in a differentiated concept of the self: in three forms of the self (corresponding with three forms of recognition) and their institutional embodiment. This concept of the self not only competes with the position of Jürgen Habermas and Axel Honneth (as it is explicitly elaborated), but also with the one of John Rawls.; In der 1970 gegründeten Reihe erscheinen Arbeiten, die philosophiehistorische Studien mit einem systematischen Ansatz oder systematische Studien mit philosophiehistorischen Rekonstruktionen verbinden.
