Paperback wide trade, very good condition, minor edgewear corners. 151 pp. Bruce Woodcock and John Coates offer a new approach in the study of Paine, Burke, Blake and De Quincey and their relations to the French Revolution. The styles and idealogical assumptions of the two critics are part of the combat with regard to interpreting Romantic literature. Romanticism (about 1800 -1850) emphasized intense emotion as an authentic source of aesthetic experience, perhaps in response to the excesses of the Industrial Revolution. (No date, but 1995, Trove.) Hardback. Condition: Mint. Dust Jacket Condition: Mint. First Thus. This copy is in mint, seemingly unread condition in a mint unclipped dustwrapper. Persephone Books reprints neglected fiction and non-fiction by mid-twentieth century writers. These books are intelligent, thought-provoking and beautifully written. Their list includes novels, short stories, diaries, memoirs and cookery books; each has an elegant uniform grey jacket and colourful endpapers. Each title has a new preface by writers such as Jilly Cooper, David Kynaston and Elaine Showalter. The story of a Proper Girl Improperly in Love' (as it was subtitled when it came out in America, the year after it was published in England), Patience is about the eponymous heroine, 28 year-old Patience Gathorne-Galley who has three small daughters and is, she thinks, newly pregnant. In the first chapter her brother, a devout Catholic (whereas Patience is a rather unthinking Catholic, nevertheless she undeniably is one) comes to tea to tell her that her husband Edward is being unfaithful. Patience, who is perfectly happy with her husband, her children and her St John's Wood life, is not too upset, in fact she is more curious than anything else because a) her husband had never seemed inattentive, on the contrary, b) she is mystified at the thought of another woman going to bed with Edward out of choice.
