Già si parla, dopo i primi osservatori orbitali, di un osservatorio astronomico permanente sulla Luna. Tutto questo ha fatto rinascere di colpo l'interesse per l'astronomia, una scienza che ha da sempre i suoi affezionati lettori e che ha dato, non per caso, alcune tra le opere maggiori della divulgazione scientifica. Eppure non sono questi gli aspetti più appassionanti della scienza del cielo, che proprio negli ultimi de cenni ha portato a limiti incredibili la nostra conoscenza dell'universo e che va accumulando continuamente scoperte sensazionali. Analizzando, con tecniche raffinatissime, i fiochi puntini di luce o i deboli impulsi radio che ci pervengono dalle profondità dello spazio, gli astronomi hanno elaborato complesse teorie sull'origine e sull'età dell'universo, sulla sua evoluzione, sulla genesi e sul divenire delle stelle e delle galassie, sulla loro distanza, sull'origine della Terra e del sistema solare. Questo volume, realizzato da un gruppo di astronomi attivi in Francia, rappresenta qualche cosa di nuovo e di particolarmente interessante non solo per l'alto livello stilistico dell'esposizione, ma anche per la tecnica usata. Il lettore viene introdotto gradualmente alle scoperte e alle teorie più recenti, che non gli vengono presentate come spesso avviene alla stregua di intuizioni o scoperte meravigliose venute fuori dal nulla, ma come la conclusione di un processo che gli viene illustrato in tutti i suoi stadi precedenti. La prospettiva storica insolita in volumi di divulgazione e di informazione scientifica si rivela il mezzo migliore per una com prensione e assimilazione in profondità della materia. Grazie a un'intelligente impaginazione, l'opera consente anche tre diverse velocità di lettura. Innanzitutto i documenti fotografici e i disegni, accompagnati da am pie didascalie, consentono di entrare subito nel vivo dell'argomento.
