Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. There's this guy we know-quiet, unassuming, with black hair and thick glasses. He's doing his best to fit in, in a world far away from the land of his birth. He knows he's different and that his differences make him alien, an outsider-but they also make him special. Yet he finds himself unab…le to reveal his true self to the world. . . .For many Asian Americans, this chronicle sounds familiar because many of us have lived it. But it also happens to be the tale of mild-mannered reporter Clark Kent, better known as Superman. And the parallels between those stories help explain why Asian Americans have become such a driving force in the contemporary comics renaissance as artists, writers, and fans.Yet there's one place where Asians are still underrepresented in comics: between the four-color covers themselves. That's why, in Secret Identities, top Asian American writers, artists, and comics professionals have come together to create twenty-six original stories centered around Asian American superheroes-stories set in a shadow history of our country, exploring ordinary Asian American life from a decidedly extraordinary perspective. Entertaining, enlightening, and more than a little provocative, Secret Identities blends action, satire, and thoughtful commentary into a groundbreaking anthology about a community too often overlooked by the cultural mainstream. Appealing to comic fans and the Asian diaspora, 'Secret Identities' makes use of the conventions of the superhero comic book to expose the real face of the Asian American experience. This graphic anthology combines historical narrative with thoughtful commentary by Asian American creators in the comics industry. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Small bumps at the edges which are slightly turning inwards. The exterior shows minor signs of wear, scuffs and scratches on the front cover, spine and back cover. The lettering on spine is worn. A tiny part of the top right side of the page are bent most likely due to the bump. Remaining interior in very good condition.; "A thousand false notes" is an exaggerated exercise in humility but what rings true is that Sakamoto Goro in his career as an antiques dealer, collector and connoisseur spanning almost seventy years has achieved true mekiki, the expert's capacity to judge authenticity that goes far beyond simply having a good eye for art. A rigorously self-critical man he has learned from his mistakes. "One's failures are the foundation of success" has been a guiding principle of his life. His autobiography, first serialized in the Nikkei newspaper in December of 1996, is more a catalogue of his early failures than his considerable successes in his Tokyo shop, Fugendo, the Tokyo Bijutsu Club and auction rooms in London, New York and Paris. With dogged determination, daring, constant study and what he calls his "fighting spirit" he has bought and sold some of the finest works of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and ancient Middle Eastern art." excerpt from the introductory text by Jeffrey Hantover.
