Cet important ouvrage, des plus rares, contient le récit militaire des six campagnes menées par le Duc Ferdinand, de 1758 à 1762. Batailles de Crevelt, Bergen, Minden, Warburg, Vellinghausen, Wilhelmstall, Hesse, etc.Ferdinand (12 janvier 1721, Brunswick 3 juillet 1792), duc de Brunswick-Lunebourg, général prussien, fils de Ferdinand Albert II de Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, duc de Brunswick-Bevern, Brunswick-Lüneburg et Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel et d'Antoinette de Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. Il servit d'abord sous Frédéric le Grand, roi de Prusse, puis commanda pour George II les troupes britanniques et hanovriennes dans la guerre de Sept Ans, 1757, s'empara de Minden et chassa les Français de la Hesse-Cassel (1762). Il quitta le service à la paix (1763), et se consacre le reste de sa vie à la franc-maçonnerie, il est Grand maître au sein de la Stricte observance templière) et à des pratiques théosophiques. Il est également maître maçon au sein des Frères asiatiques et membre des Illuminés de Bavière sous le nom de Aaron, affilié en 1783. Le savoisien Joseph de Maistre publie en 1782 le Mémoire au duc de Brunswick à l'occasion du convent maçonnique de Wilhelmsbad que doit présider le duc Ferdinand de Brunswick-Lunebourg. Il a laissé des Mémoires, publiés seulement en 1858 à Leipzig par Ernst Julius Georg von dem Knesebeck. La carte qui manque a notre volume, celle de la bataille de Minden, correspond à l'une des plus importantes défaites de l'armée française. La bataille de Minden, épisode décisif de la guerre de Sept Ans, s'est déroulée le 1er août 1759 aux portes de la place de Minden en Rhénanie-Westphalie. Les armées britanniques et leurs alliés, le Brunswick-Lunebourg (ou Hanovre) et le Royaume de Prusse, vainquirent la France et ses alliés, dont le duché de Saxe. La série de défaites infligées à la France au cours de la guerre, qui culmina avec la confrontation de Minden, ternit sérieusement l hégémonie des Bourbon en Europe. Les conséquences immédiates de cette bataille furent la conquête des colonies françaises d outre-mer en Amérique et aux Indes par la Grande-Bretagne qui, par une tactique remarquable de combat naval, parvint à s'assurer pour le reste du siècle la suprématie maritime et coloniale.
