Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book is a substantial contribution to the study of atmospheric temperature covering the United States and some adjacent parts of America. It contains the results of all observations to the end of the year 1870 from various sources. The author has endeavoured to present his results in a precise form and in a manner comparable among themselves, with mean or normal values or the so-called constants of temperature. The statistical information is followed by an extended discussion of the daily and annual temperature variations, their differences with seasons and for longer periods of years, and the generalization of the results either in analytical or graphical form. The author's insights on the subject shall be valuable to meteorologists as they continue to study climate patterns and changes over time. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the meticulous measurement of the Earth's curvature along the Eastern Oblique Arc of the United States, a vast undertaking spanning from Maine to Louisiana. The author meticulously details the historical context, motivations, and challenges faced by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey during this ambitious project. The narrative unfolds across several distinct periods, each marked by advancements in technology and methodology. With a keen eye for detail, the author unveils the intricacies of early surveying techniques, base line measurements, and the complex triangulation network that formed the backbone of this scientific endeavor. Readers are transported back to a time when geodesy played a pivotal role in shaping our understanding of the planet's form and dimensions. Central to this work is the exploration of the Eastern Oblique Arc's significance within the broader field of geodesy. The author sheds light on the unique challenges and opportunities presented by measuring an arc inclined to the meridian, as opposed to traditional meridional arcs.
