Ich war schon über vierzig, ein viel zu später Leser von Proust; und auch dort, auf dem Père Lachaise, dieses Gefühl, fast so etwas wie ein Verwandter zu sein, das Gefühl, zuviel zu wissen. Es war 1977, ich war noch ganz erfüllt von Albertine und Charlus, von der Herzogin von Guermantes und Norpois, von Bloch und Elstir. Und es war ein Novembertag. Allerseelen, kalt und winterlich. Die Lebenden besuchten die Toten, und ich besuchte die meinen und hielt fest, was ich sah und dachte. Die Bestsellerliste des Todes wurde von Balzac angeführt: Er hatte vier Sträuße Chrysanthemen und zwei brennende Lichter. Proust mußte sich mit zwei kunstlos abgelegten Sträußchen rostfarbener Astern zufriedengeben. Gérard de Nerval mit einem einzigen ganz kleinen, rührenden Strauß blauer Blümchen. Heute, so viele Jahre später, sehe ich das Blau dieser Vergißmeinnicht noch vor mir. Balzac und Nerval liegen an derselben Gasse, der eine schräg gegenüber vom anderen; wer zu Proust möchte, muß, wie auch Besucher von Piaf, den Weg verlassen - ohne die Landkarte dieses Totenreichs würde man sein Grab nicht finden. Als ich davor stand, wußte ich nicht so recht, was ich denken sollte. Es ist ja auch verwirrend. Während ein Grab Anwesenheit vortäuscht - schließlich steht ein Name darauf, liegt ein Toter darin -, bezeichnet es natürlich gerade die Ab-Wesenheit einer Person: Proust ist nirgendwo mehr, also auch nicht hier. Und dennoch, angesichts der konkreten schwarzen marmornen Form des Grabes wiegt man sich einen Moment in der Illusion, er sei anwesend, man sei bei ihm; wenn es nicht albern wäre, würde man du côté de chez lui sagen und dabei an zwei schmale Kirchtürme irgendwo in der Normandie denken, haben sie doch im Leben des Kindes, das zu dem Mann werden sollte, der nun in dem Grab liegt, eine so wichtige Rolle gespielt, daß er mich durch die Art, wie er darüber geschrieben hat, heute noch zwingt, über ihn und seine verlorene und wiedergefundene Zeit nachzudenken.
