In reality, this is the thirteenth edition of 1893, as both appendix and date follow the twelfth appendix in this volume. Rare original material. Smooth dark brown boards with lighter brown and red globular patterning, brown cloth spine wrap with gilt spine titles, some corner wear, rub, some missing spine material to head and heel. Pages generally very good. Beautiful frontispiece fold-out map, near fine: "Carpenter's New Map of the World. Proving It Be a Plane with The Earth 'Stretched Out Above the Waters.'" Antiquarian bookplate inside cover with crest design: "Manchester Public Free Libraries." Intriguing design features steed with serpent tongue and crowned lion, spherical matrix with seven bees above shield with sailing vessel and latin "Concilio et Labore." Adjacent plate is stamped due date slip with earliest date being 16 Nov. 44 and latest being 2, Jan. 1980. Manchester crest also blind-stamped as circular impressed seal to second title page and frontispiece map. William Carpenter presents here his evidence in "One Hundred Proofs That the Earth Not a Globe." Carpenter lived from 1830 -1896. A printer from Greenwich, England, he was a leading proponent of the concept of earth as relatively plane-like and circular in design. As an accolyte of English writer Samuel Rowbotham (1816-1885), or 'Parallax,' they produced the pamphlet "Zetetic Astronomy" in 1849. In 1864, Carpenter published "Theoretical Astronomy Examined and Exposed - Proving the Earth not a Globe" utilizing the pseudonym of 'Common Sense'. He later emigrated to Baltimore, Maryland and in 1885 first published this volume: "A Hundred Proofs the Earth is not a Globe." The one hundred numbered proofs are laid out over the first twenty-six pages of this volume and are indexed as follows: "1. The aeronuat sees for himself; 2. Standing water is Level; 3.
