Non una ricerca compiuta, quindi, ma piuttosto gli "errori" (in senso sia letterale c…he figurato) e gli andirivieni della ricerca. Il labirintico alternarsi di ipotesi e di controipotesi, di dissezioni testuali e di opzioni interpretative finisce col presentare un'immagine del lavoro dello storico alquanto diversa da quella, pulita e asettica, diffusa magari con la complicità dei metodologi più autorevoli. Un'immagine più «sporca», dove il caso e i presupposti (o i pregiudizi?) ideologici intervengono in maniera imprevedibile nel rigoroso «gioco di pazienza» dell'analisi testuale e della scoperta erudita. Un vero e proprio «giallo» filologico, sarcastico e autoironico.
