Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This study investigates the influence of personal perspectives, grade level, and gender on the outcome of various psychological tests like those found in the Binet-Simon measuring scale. The author analyzes each test for errors that may arise from the examiner's biases or the test's design. The author demonstrates how variations in the way examiners give tests can affect results, particularly in tests that rely on subjective judgment. The author also explores how external factors like age and educational attainment, as well as inherent characteristics like gender, can influence test performance. This exploration allows for a deeper understanding of how tests measure intelligence and how to interpret results accurately. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book delves into the complex and often controversial topic of human intelligence, exploring the results of the U.S. Army's mental testing program conducted during World War I. The author meticulously analyzes the data gathered from over a million individuals, offering insights into the relationship between intelligence and factors such as nativity and length of residence in the United States. By examining the historical context of large-scale human migrations, the author positions the study of intelligence within a broader understanding of population dynamics and their impact on national development. This book challenges readers to consider the implications of these findings for immigration policies and the potential consequences of neglecting the issue of "race deterioration." Through rigorous statistical analysis and careful interpretation, the author presents a compelling case for the significance of intelligence in shaping individual and societal outcomes. This book is not merely a collection of data but a thought-provoking exploration of the factors that contribute to human intelligence and the implications for our collective future. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Book appears unread, with very slight bump to top corner of the front board; speckling to top of text block, though no foxing throughout pages. Prior owner signature on front endpaper, dated Mar. 1924, Monrovia, Calif. Plain dust jacket shows some light wrinkling and a few tiny spots of paper loss at edges. A notorious and truly significant work by a Princeton University psychologist and eugenicist. Brigham worked on U.S. Army mental tests and, once at Princeton, analyzed WWI data, concluding that native-born white Americans are genetically more intelligent than any other groups. 'A Study of American Intelligence' purports to prove 'the intellectual superiority of the Nordic race' and argues that 'immigration should not only be restrictive but highly selective,' so as to halt 'the deterioration of American intelligence.' Racist pundits and policymakers used Brigham's pseudoscientific findings as ammunition to curtail immigration from anywhere other than Western Europe, and to codify Jim Crow. Two years after the book was published, Brigham created a college admissions test called the Princeton Test; in 1926, he launched the SAT for College Board. It took another four years before Brigham, in a 1930 paper, recanted his earlier analysis, acknowledging that his bigoted conclusions were 'without foundation' and that his 1923 study 'with its entire hypothetical superstructure of racial differences collapses completely.' But it was too late: Anti-immigration laws and racist laws were in place, thanks in part to 'A Study of American Intelligence.' A startlingly uncommon title, and genuinely scarce in DJ. 210 pages. Often Cited, This Notorious Study Is Itself Quite Scarce In This First Edition, First Printing. Worldcat Records Only 7 Institutional Holdings, Although The 1975 Reprint Is Commonly Encountered. No Corresponding Contemporary Study Of Similar Trends Of American Knowledge, Skills, Or Abilities In Any Field Other Than Those Studied Here, That Is, Preparation For Modern Soldiering - Americans Make "Better Soldiers", So We Should Restrict Immigration Severely So All Immigrants Will Most Closely Resemble Native-Born Americans? Isn't That What The Gorillas Say About Immigrants Into Their Areas? Per Wikipedia, Carl Campbell Brigham (May 4, 1890 - January 24, 1943) Was An American Eugenicist And Professor Of Psychology At Princeton University's Department Of Psychology And A Pioneer In The Field Of Psychometrics. Brigham Joined Princeton As A Faculty Member In 1920 And Began Working On Adapting The Army Mental Tests For Use In College Admissions.[7] This Test Became Highly Controversial As A Methodology For Testing Mental Ability Due To Its Biases Favoring Caucasian [White] Native-Born Americans. In 1923, Brigham Published His Influential Book, A Study Of American Intelligence. Analyzing The Data From The World War I Army Mental Tests, Brigham Concluded That Native-Born (Caucasian) Americans Had The Highest Intelligence Out Of The Groups Tested. He Proclaimed The Intellectual Superiority Of The "Nordic Race" And The Inferiority Of The "Alpine" (Eastern European), "Mediterranean", And "Negro" Races And Argued That Immigration Should Be Carefully Controlled To Safeguard The "American Intelligence". Brigham Believed That In The Early Years Of The Twentieth Century, American Intelligence Was Declining Because Of Recent Immigration Waves From Eastern Europe ("Carl Campbell Brigham: The Man Who Devised The Sat"). Harvard Professor E.G. Boring Suggested That Brigham Was Not Collecting Data With Scientific Purpose Which Biased His Results In Favor Of His Ideas (1923). He Sat On The Advisory Council Of The American Eugenics Society (Later Known As The Society For Biodemography And Social Biology)[1] And His Early Writings Heavily Influenced The Eugenics Movement And Anti-Immigration Legislation In The United States. He Created The Sat For The College Board. His Wikipedia Portrait Photo Bears An Uncanny Resemblance To A Gorilla.
