El Capitán Frederick Marryat (Londres, 1792-Langham, 1872) ingresó a los catorce años en la Armada Real británica y dio sus primeros pasos en el mar a bordo del buque Impérieuse capitaneado por Lord Cochrane, cuyo valor inspiró a Marryat futuros personajes de sus n…ovelas. En 1814 fue nombrado teniente de navío del Newcastle y en 1825 capitán del Tees. A los treinta y ocho años se retiró del servicio con rango de capitán y se dedicó por entonces a escribir (como Conrad, como Melville) narraciones de aventuras en el mar, batallas, tormentas y naufragios, contando para ello con su enorme conocimiento de primera mano de la vida marinera. En El perro diabólico nos encontramos con la balandra Yungfrau, cuya misión es patrullar el Canal de la Mancha con el fin de impedir el contrabando procedente de las costas francesas, y su oficial al mando, el teniente Cornelis Vanslyperken, sirve también como correo real del rey Guillermo con los Estados Generales de Holanda. Estamos en 1699. Pero no es el teniente Cornelis quien protagoniza esta divertida y original novela, sino su perro Malaspulgas, cuyo lamentable aspecto físico y mirada traicionera concita el odio de toda la tripulación. El joven Smallbones, sirviente de Cornelis, decide declarar una guerra sin cuartel al antipático perro, respaldado en su lucha por toda la tripulación. De sus sucesivos enfrentamientos a muerte ambos salen maltrechos, pero, para sorpresa de todos, siempre logran sobrevivir, forjando así la leyenda sobre el carácter sobrenatural del perro diabólico.El Club Diógenes año: 2002.
