Hardback. Condition: New. Artful descriptions. This volume presents kindred works important for evidence relating to late Greek art. They are attributed to two men each known as Philostratus and to a third man called Callistratus, otherwise unknown. To an elder Philostratus, the Lemnian, born ca. AD 190, junior kinsman of the Philostratus who wrote the Life of Apollonius of Tyana and Lives of the Sophists, is attributed the series of sixty-five Eikones or Imagines, descriptions (in two books) ostensibly of paintings in a gallery at Naples. A younger Philostratus, apparently his grandson, is credited with seventeen similar descriptions. The fourteen Ekphraseis attributed to Callistratus are descriptions of statues in stone or bronze, written probably in the fourth century AD. It is not known to what extent the descriptions are of real works of art, but they show how artists treated their subjects, and are written with some artistic knowledge. Yet rhetorical skill dominates: these pieces were written to display the writers' powers of description.…

Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the imaginative terrain of paintings and sculptures from the Graeco-Roman period, through the lens of a skilled orator and philosopher called Philostratus. His work provides a philosophical and literary interpretation of more than sixty examples, offering an exceptional account of the artistic sensibilities of his day. Philostratus is not primarily interested in the techniques of painting or sculpture, nor in the lives of the artists, but explores the paintings as a source of cultural and philosophical insights. His approach is to use the paintings as a stimulus for discourses on literary, historical, mythological, and philosophical themes. He interprets and expands on the original stories and myths depicted in the works, reading into them his own philosophical reflections. This unique blend of art appreciation, literary interpretation, and philosophical musings make this book an invaluable resource for understanding the artistic and intellectual climate of the Graeco-Roman world. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
