Hardback. Condition: New. Questions like these have entertained anyone who has ever puzzled over the tasting notes of a wine "expert." Such questions can be bewildering but they also raise fascinating philosophical issues about the nature of sense perception, knowledge, beauty, and meaning. Wine appreciation can reveal important insights about ourselves, our interests, and pleasures. In a lively and engaging discussion of the philosophical significance of wine, Cain Todd brings much-needed clarity to confusions about wine characteristics and the nature of expertise, while championing the objectivity and seriousness of our appreciation of wine. Todd shows that to be able to interpret and appreciate the complexity and unique values of an object that, at first, is just an alcoholic drink, is an incredible thing and an experience without which the world would be a poorer place. Touching on issues in metaphysics, epistemology, and the philosophy of mind, Todd offers a sustained defence of the objectivity of wine judgments, a demystification of the nature of expertise, and a theory of the aesthetic value of wine and its appreciation.…

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 2014 OUP hardcover edition. Light reading wear else very good condition. This volume brings together new work by leading philosophers on the topics of emotion and value, and explores issues at their intersection. Philosophers and psychologists working on the emotions have reached something of a consensus about the complex, inter-related nature of the affective and cognitive components of emotions, and have increasingly focussed on the important epistemological role that emotions play in giving us access to values. At the same time, an increasing number of philosophers have become attracted to analyses of value that give emotions a prominent place in evaluative judgements and experiences. The work undertaken in each of these areas has important implications for current research on topics such as the role that emotions play in practical rationality and moral psychology, the connection between imagination and emotion in the appreciation of fiction, and more generally with the ability of emotions to discern axiological saliences and to ground (or fail to ground) the objectivity of ethical or aesthetic value judgements. This volume makes a unique contribution to scholarship on emotion and value by bringing together top authors from these lines of research. In addition, the volume contains a number of contributions that explore various links between the emotions and self-understanding, touching on a range of themes that include depression, empathy, agency, guilt, and self-trust. All of these issues are approached from a number of different perspectives in order to present the reader with a wide view of this extremely rich terrain and to demonstrate how the latest thinking in a number of currently intensive areas of research is deeply interconnected. Contents: 1. Emotion and Value: Introduction - Sabine Roeser and Cain Todd Part I. Emotion and the Nature of Value 2. In What Sense Are Emotions Evaluations? - Julien A. Deonna and Fabrice Teroni 3. Evaluative Phenomenology - Michelle Montague 4. Emotion, Attention, and the Nature of Value - Michael Brady 5. Emotions as Unitary States - Jonathan Dancy 6. Relatively Fitting Emotions and Apparently Objective Values - Cain Todd Part II. Emotion, Evaluation, and Justification 7. Emotion, Evaluative Perception, and Epistemic Justification - Adam C. Pelser 8. Why Recalcitrant Emotions Are Not Irrational - Sabine A. Doring 9. Surprise - Adam Morton 10. Emotions Fit for Fiction - Greg Currie Part III. Emotion, Value, and the Self 11. Emotional Self-Trust - Linda Zagzebski 12. Self-Empathy and Moral Repair - Nancy Sherman 13. Emotions and the Virtues of Self-Understanding - Michael Lacewing 14. Emotion and Agency - Jan Slaby and Philipp Wuschner 15. Evaluating Existential Despair - Matthew Ratcliffe.…

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - Does this Bonnes-Mares really have notes of chocolate, truffle, violets, and merde de cheval Can wines really be feminine, profound, pretentious, or cheeky Can they express emotion or terroir Do the judgements of 'experts' have any objective validity Is a great wine a work of art Questions like these will have been entertained by anyone who has ever puzzled over the tasting notes of a wine writer, or been baffled by the response of a sommelier to an innocent question. Only recently, however, have they received the serious philosophical attention they deserve. Touching on issues in metaphysics, epistemology, the philosophy of mind, and aesthetics, this book provides a clear and engaging discussion of the philosophical significance of wine that will be accessible to all wine lovers, specialists and non-specialists alike. The author offers throughout a sustained defence of the objectivity of wine judgements, a demystification of the nature of expertise, and a theory of the aesthetic value of wine and its appreciation.…
